So on Friday I had, keep driving to regenerate exhaust filter, now the car has only done 2,000 miles and is 3 months old, so I looked in the manual and was told what to and the notice went off, I can see this being a pain if its going to happen every 3 months and of cause the time and cost of having to drive for 30 miles at 50mph or above  at 1,500 revs. I am on a couple of Kia forums and lots of people and saying its happening to them and one person has said they was told by kia that the Sportage 1.6 petrol is not suitable for short journeys, guess a call to Kia tomorrow is in order.

price of fuel lately I’m passing many cars driving between 30 35 mph on 50 mph roads probably to save a bit, however the engine do need a bit extra every so often I guess..?

its the short journeys that does it as the exhaust doesn’t get hot

Hhmm yes but maybe these cars I’m passing are only taking a short journey too, so why not get it up to speed and try holding the gears slightly longer rather than create a known problem..

            maybe..

Please look at the following thread as it appears the ‘lift off’ method is the way to clear a petrol particulate filter:

As soon as I saw “PPF” in the title, I knew it would be for the KIA Sportage ICE/MHEV.

I’m shocked following KIA’s instructions of how to clear it worked for you. The method KIA describes is how to clear a DPF and it didn’t work for me. I initially followed KIA’s advice (didn’t) and then drove the way that I understand on how to clear a PPF – Get engine warm, then find long stretches where you can use engine breaking and regular breaking. It’s during these phases that hot, oxygen rich exhaust gasses are produced which burns off the particulates.

you were also lucky that you got 2,000 miles from the car before the blockage, mine was about 1,200 and under 3 months. The worrying thing is that I’d done quite a lot of motorway trips and it was only 3 weeks after a long trip that the ppf clogged up.

If it’s an automatic, most seem to change gears way to early to keep the revs as low as possible, i think for environmentalreasons and driving in manual mode kind of defeats the object.

I went from diesel to petrol as i was having dpf regen issues due to not doing the long journey’s, at least once a week i used to be doing. I hadn’t had any issues before with diesels, but then they became regular, especially as i do alot of cold engine driving, so I’d stay away from any car with a ppf also if that’s you.

All petrol cars less than four years old will have a ppf. Hard to avoid, but then apart from Kia they aren’t even noticed.

A2B dude, maybe if it’s an auto and changing very early to save on whatever, resulting to low revs, would there be a sport mode (dynamic mode in my case?) to maybe lengthen the changing gear process resulting in clearing the renown filter problem..
