Hi all
Generally, I have been paying AP on the day of collection and have used a card (debit and credit in the past) but I was advised today by the dealership that I need to pay via BACS now, but they don’t think the care will be ready for another week or so.
Is that the new norm? Is it reasonable for me to say I will only pay on the day of collection when I inspect the car and am happy it is as I ordered – I am paranoid do due to several errors from the manufacturer/dealership, which has resulted in a year’s wait for the car.
Any opinion is appreciated.

We’ve been and ordered our new car today from Bristol Street Motors.
More importantly, what did you order?
November 27, 2023 at 4:42 pm #250161Another Qashqai Tenkna, the 3rd one in a row ?????
This is a 1.5 e-power, I was very impressed by the drive and the car as a whole????
Far away is near at hand in visions of elsewhere.
November 27, 2023 at 6:54 pm #250168This is the Motability Guidance which basically say’s it is up to the dealer how you pay the AP.
How you pay your Advance Payment depends on your dealer.
Bank Transfer – every dealer accepts this, but you are likely to have to send the payment one or two days before you get your vehicle.
Debit card – some dealer’s accept up to £1,000 this way, but not every dealer does.
Credit card – only a few dealers accept this.
Cheque – dealers do not accept this.
Cash – most dealers do not accept this, but this is down to each dealer’s discretion.
So it looks like our opinion as the customers does not seem to matter.
November 28, 2023 at 2:31 pm #250262I’m collecting a Qashqui on Monday and have been told that the AP has to be paid in advance. I said I wanted to inspect the car first (have done this on all the Motability cars I’ve had previously) but was told that I would not be able to collect the car if the AP hadn’t been transferred the day before. This is a first!
Why not simply ask to see it the day before then?
Current car: MG HS Exclusive in nice shiny black. 🙂
November 28, 2023 at 3:01 pm #250268If I was asked to pay in advance, I’d want to see the car, with acceptance that I can’t drive away until the cash has cleared. So I’d go in and inspect the car, transfer payment and then go home all excited for whenever we’d arranged to come back and collect the car.
What I’d not do is pay without being absolutely certain that the car is exactly what and when I want. If I had any doubt then they can wait until those doubts are resolved and if there’s any issues and they’re trying to force me to pay then the last word would be ‘off’.

Agreed – I got an email to say that 2 things I ordered as part of the original order are on not available and had I of paid then I would have been charged for this and not received it on the day of pickup – keep asking them to provide me a full breakdown of what I ordered vs what I will receive but do not seem to get a straightforward response, other than I need to pay before I collect.
How can I trust what I am paying for is actually what I ordered as there seems to be new communication every other day to say things are missing from the order. It is starting to frustrate me in all honesty!
November 28, 2023 at 3:37 pm #250270As others have said, you need to view the car, ensuring nothing is missing from what you ordered before handing over any payment!

Thanks – this is exactly want I asked for, and this was skirted around, and the response was, “if you want your car adapted, then you need to pay upfront and in full; otherwise, we cant get your car taxed and adapted”.
But how can I pay upfront and in full if I am being told certain things I ordered (at extra cost) are not available but the invoice still shows them as part of the overall payment… makes no sense

what did you ordered at extra cost?. This should also be on a invoice when you ordered the car.
I would then email a list of what extra’s you ordered to the dealership, specifically asking the dealer, if these are pressent on the car. Also request they confirm this in writing by post or email, as a backup.
If the dealer is unwilling to provide you this information, I would take it the car doesn’t have any or all of the extra’s on the vehicle and consider walking away and ordering a vehicle elsewhere. Its a pain I know but a few on here have been fobbed of with a stock car, that magically apeared and not the factory order they expected.
I would also inform Motability, that the dealer won’t comfirm any of the optional extra’s, you ordered, yet still wanting to charge you for them. Motability probably won’t be interested however its good to keep them in the loop.
For what its worth, Ive never paid AP upfront, always on day of collection!
Good luck 🙂
November 28, 2023 at 4:51 pm #250280I agree with @kezo, if the dealership won’t provide the information that makes you feel comfortable, cancel the order and go elsewhere. They really won’t like it but only have themselves to blame.
I’d even call Motability and explain the whole situation and ask them to cancel the order ready to put the order in again elsewhere.

November 30, 2023 at 11:20 am #250407We’ve been and ordered our new car today from Bristol Street Motors. I did ask about the AP payment early in the conversation and it was confirmed that this is their AP process. When the car is at the dealers they call you and let you know, BSM then send you a WAYS form, I think that’s what it’s called, you do a Bank Transfer to them for the AP and any other extras fuel, mats etc. once that’s done, they arrange a collection date. As I posted perviously, it does leave this grey area of you cannot accept the car because of an issue with damage or the wrong spec, what happens to the AP you have already paid. If the car is the wrong spec and has to be re-ordered then I would expect the AP to refunded.
I have had the “ways to pay form” it does not demand payment now, it simply states that payment must be cleared before pick up and you must allow 2 days for payment to clear.
The AP payment will have to be by bank transfer as Debit and Credit cards are limited to £500.
So I will wait until the dealership contact me to inform me that the car is with them and then make the bank transfer.
I will not be taking up their discounted offer of £100 for a set of mats ?
