I was listening to the radio the other day and a woman was on complaining about speed bumps saying she has had two broken bones as a result of going over them in her car. Its never crossed my mind that these things can cause so much damage to the body.
I try to avoid them completely when the wife is in the car as they cause her a great deal of pain.

WinstonDid it say what car the woman was driving? My guess is the General Lee from Dukes of Hazzard ??
One good thing about having a larger/higher car is if it’s the single type ones you can usually drive right over them as you car is wide enough to do so without hitting them
I still slow right down though cos some of them are like mini Munro’s

PhiljbYes bri I’ve had fractured vertebrae from a hospital transport, driver hitting a speed bump at about 35mph I nearly hit the ambulance roof with my head.
Osteoporosis comes with my condition it’s a bummer.
These days I drive like miss daisy over speed bumps and there are a fair few in London.
It’s not necessary to have so many. Some councils are worse then others.January 11, 2020 at 4:04 pm #102839
ThargThey also give me trouble (busted discs). So I do the Miss Daisy thing like philjb. However, if the road is wide enough and there’s no traffic, bumps can be moderated by taking them slantwise at about 45 degrees. This does mean driving on “wrong” side of road so must be done slowly and after taking a damn good look to make sure no other vehicle in conflict. (most of bumps near me span full width of road)

Don’t know if you have them down south, expect you do, but I hate the ones like a pyramid with the top cut off.

The only place we have those hard short flat top bumps are at the local cinema – we actually drive an additional 15 miles to another cinema for that exact reason. My old 407 actually bottomed out on them they were so high and harsh although I imagine it’d be much less hassle in the XC60 we have now or the Tiguan we’re expecting in the next week or so."Man is born in freedom, but he soon becomes a slave, in cages of convention, from the cradle, to the grave."

Philjbspeed bumps are only on every side road and bumps and chicanes on B roads, every crossing and entrance /exit of side roads have raised humps to make pedestrian crossing level.
Mind you our speed limit down here on most roads is 20 with cameras all over the place.
So I’m not alone driving slow, we have every kind you could imagine as some roads you can see the council has experimented with different designs.
All are a massive pain in my spine and hips.January 12, 2020 at 7:47 am #102876Same here. I have to be really careful and crawl over them.
However, I also think of the car. To hit a speed bump at 30 mph will see the car needing new springs in no time. I’ve a few friends who drive over them like they’re not there and marvel at how they’ve broken another spring!? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?
January 12, 2020 at 8:11 am #102877Speed bumps and pot holes stopped me from having a gorgeous Seat Leon FR I went to the Seat dealer two and half years ago and drove a dsg version over speed humps and pot holes but found the sports suspension with the 18 inch alloys a too hard ride so I had my third Golf with non sports suspension and 16 inch alloys and it glides over the bumps and pot holes the ride is superb

GeorgieSpeed bumps are an absolute pain – the town where my Mum, sister and older brother all live is now awash with them after the Council initially placed speed bumps the length of the main road, then along all the side roads that people took to to avoid the original bumps, and then the new rat runs used to avoid the additional bumps etc etc until most of the town’s roads and side streets are now smothered. People living on the edge of town now shop in other towns rather than crawl along at 10mph to reach the Town Centre, which is now pretty much dead – making the original peed bumps redundant. Genius!
Unfortunately, I still have to negotiate the wretched things in order to visit my family.
