Just wanted to reassure anyone waiting that the process can go smoothly for some.
Whilst I was quoted an unreasonable amount for groundworks going under slabs at the front door, it turns out the cable fitted under my door step so not needed anyway. I have got some conduit along the bottom of the house but ChargedEV have just fitted my charger and it is neater than I hoped it would be.
Communication from both OHME and ChargedEV has been first class throughout the process and the survey went very smoothly via video call. If you are in the SW you may well get a guy called Matt as fitter. A credit to ChargedEV and overly helpful. One happy customer here. Just the 7 week wait for the car now!!!

We also had a very good experience having our Ohme charger fitted. Around 5 weeks from ordering car to charger install. No issues what so ever.

March 6, 2024 at 4:17 pm #261271I believe most installs go well and there is no reason for them not to, providing “properly” qualified installers who take a bit of pride in their work fit them.
Sadly when it does go wrong, it really does go wrong, which could be down to many things including people jumping on the band wagon, solely becoming part P qualified, which in the scheme of things isn’t a fully qualified spark, similar to whats happening in the heat pump industry.
The other grey area is the scandalous cost for non standard install work but, when Motability pay below the going rate and by the time its passed to a contract comany, along with the possibilty of been contracted out again, theres not left n the kitty to pay the installer. This explains the higher costs for non standard work or delays getting the charger installed, due to the spark’s own work taking priority.
March 6, 2024 at 4:38 pm #261276The guy who installed ours was very open about his earnings, he was on £45k salary plus £30 per install, he said he could easily do 3 each day. He was a fully qualified local authority trained spark.

How strange someone would gloat about their income, yet only get £12-£15/ph installing a charger!
I charge £90 for a EICR on a one bed property safety cert and certainly wouldn’t be signing my life away as well as doing the manual work for £30.

£45k per year plus £30 per install as an incentive sounds pretty good to me 🙂
March 6, 2024 at 5:48 pm #261286I thought £65k a year for a salaried spark was pretty good, maybe I should retrain!

If you retrain and can get £65k or even £45k a year as a domestic spark, do let me know and I will quickly quit self employment, put all my worries behind me and come and join you!

Do you think the installer was full of ??
I very nearly became a spark. I passed the apprenticeship test in the 80’s for a big company, think they were called Baileys. There were about 50 of us in a school hall taking the test. I decided to do A levels instead.March 6, 2024 at 7:36 pm #261297Interestingly my installer said he was regularly assigned 3 jobs a day but only ever completed 2 as “If you do it properly it is very difficult to complete 3 without cutting corners”.

Did my apprenticeship at Michelin, moved on to what is now the national grid and then started my own company and employing a small number later on. Mostly stayed in the realms of industrial, commercial and security (cctv etc) and in the last decade commercial charge points, solar and now I’m ready for the knackers yard lol. I also use to help my uncle, when school age who owned a Pansonic repair centre and gained my electronics certification early on, which helped to pay for my racing years.
As for the bloke talking ? I reckon so mate. You have only got to look at the national average pay for sparks and we all know what happens the further north you get. Check a Trade and all them will give you idea’s of pay but, other ttrades have caught up if not surpassed domestic sparks lately. Its not as it once was.

March 8, 2024 at 11:52 am #265369My bloke was back today to fit ours, and think it all went as smoothly as it could. Worst part was him turning up at 8am 🙂
He had it all up and ready to go in 2 hours. Ran through the app with me, and left me some booklets.
I’ve got a few months before the motor is here, so plenty of time to get myself set up with the other useful atpps etc.

Glad to hear it went smoothly
I assume you can see the CT Clampreading and Load balancing active all working in the App ( my charger then tap wheel top page)
March 8, 2024 at 12:21 pm #265491Yeah, all looks good to my novice eyes.
I have
Max Charge Current – 32A
CT Clamp Reading – 2A
Load Balancing Active – Yes
Load Limit – 100A
March 8, 2024 at 12:28 pm #265492🙂 I expect you have already had a walk through of the App but for others picking up on this post
I Personally activate lock/approve/sleep when finished and then deactivate when using the charger

Yeah, the guy that did the install said to do that 🙂
Now just waiting on VW… So might give them a call next week and see if I’ve got a build date.
March 9, 2024 at 3:04 pm #267622Thought it looked a pretty decent job, so thought I would post a pic of the install for Kezo & Ele to cast their eyes over 🙂
March 9, 2024 at 3:40 pm #267624Kezo is the professional that is able to judge
To my untrained eye it looks to be Ok
All you need now is the VW
March 9, 2024 at 8:12 pm #267634purely going from what I can see of the charger install everything looks to be fine.
Not a fan on how the gas has being bonded but that’s just being pickyMarch 10, 2024 at 3:45 am #267643purely going from what I can see of the charger install everything looks to be fine. Not a fan on how the gas has being bonded but that’s just being picky
Nice one, thanks 🙂
This will show you how clueless I am… Is that the small yellow cable running from the right hand side into the electric box?
Think that was all done before we got here, but will mention it to my brother’s best mate next time I see him. He has his own firm, and would have done the install had it not been free with Motability.
