Our Motability Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV does not come with a spare wheel, not even a space saver, just a pump and some tyre sealant? So today  I brought a second hand alloy wheel of a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander cost £20.00 I was expecting it to have some curb damage and some scruffs, it was in very good condition as if you were buying of the main dealer. I am going to have a new tyre fitted and balanced for £61.00, I hate tyre sealants.

Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally say the wrong thing.

The problem is that some cars now come without a ‘wheel well’ in the boot to store a spare wheel in, or the space is taken up with other things (battery etc).

It cuts down the available boot space considerably if storing it on top of the boot floor.

Personally I think all vehicles should have a spare wheel/tyre or at least a ‘space-saver’ but in the quest to save money and weight (thus emissions etc) a lot of manufacturers are just giving a can of ‘goo’ instead.

p.s. don’t forget you will probably need a jack and a wheel-brace as well unless relying on the RAC to come out if you have a puncture.

            That is very strange indeed.

By doing so, it is as if the manufacturer expects you will need them to change a wheel at some point, but then not give you the wheel (or often not even the option of one)!

It is a bit strange Dave, we tow a caravan so really need a proper spare wheel, I always had a serviceable spare wheel this is so strange to me.

No spare in my Cooper S; exhaust gets in the way of the underslung frame used to hold wheel in non-S Coopers and others. Previous Skodas also had no spare which was a right pain since I had three punctures with them. Doesn’t make much difference, because I have to call out the RAC either with or without a spare. Wonky back and legs mean I can’t work a jack which is needed for both goo and spare!

The current Volvo XC60 only has goo, but the B class Merc I had before had run flats and no spare fitted. One the one occasion I did have a flat, KwikFit couldn’t find a tyre and the car had to be recovered to home. The tyres used to delaminate frequently, must have had 4 complete sets in three years.
