My wife’s PIP review has come through (yippee!) and we now need to change our Motability car.

The current car (Toyota C-HR) has a personalised numberplate, which wasn’t a problem with Motability when we go the car, they accepted it without question. It’s a number which she’s had for donkey’s years and was bought for her as a present and relates to her initials and year of birth – it’s a bit obscure!

      My question is:
What are the steps to get this number off the existing car, and on to the new car (when it eventually arrives)?
How much of this can be handled by the dealer?
      A step-by-step idiot’s guide would be welcomed!

If you are interested in adding personalised number plates to your Motability Scheme vehicle, you should call us on 0300 456 4566 before purchasing the plates to check that they meet our criteria. If we agree that you can add your personalised number plates, you will need to call us back once you have purchased them to start the process.

If you already own the right to display the plates, you should call us to discuss adding them to your vehicle and we will check them against our criteria at the same time.

Please note that we are unable to accept any responsibility for the retaining or assigning of a personalised number plate. If you add personalised number plates to your Motability Scheme vehicle, you may lose your entitlement to them if we have not been notified of your plans at the end of your lease. Please speak to your dealer about what you plan to do, or contact us on 0300 456 4566.

Adding personalised plates at the start of your lease
Some dealerships are able to add personalised number plates before you collect your new vehicle, but you will need to discuss this with them before the vehicle is registered. If they are unable to add personalised plates, or have already registered the vehicle, you should take delivery of the vehicle with the standard age-related plates and then contact us to add the personalised number plates. Please note that you will need to wait for at least five days from the handover before contacting us.

If your dealer can add personalised number plates, they will need the Certificate of Entitlement (V750) if the plates have yet to be used, or Retention Certificate (V778) if they have previously been registered on another vehicle. Both of these are issued by the DVLA. The dealer will also check the plates against our criteria as part of the process.

Adding personalised plates during your lease
If you have already taken delivery of your vehicle and wish to add personalised number plates, you should call us on 0300 456 4566 to discuss this. Depending whether or not the plates have previously been registered on another vehicle, you will need the Certificate of Entitlement (V750) or Retention Certificate (V778) to hand.

If we agree to add the plates we will usually update the DVLA records whilst you are speaking to us.

Removing personalised plates at the end of your lease
We will send you a letter approximately four weeks before the end of your lease with more information about removing your personalised number plates.

If you wish to add the plates to your next Scheme vehicle or keep them to use in the future, you will need to retain the registration with the DVLA before you hand your current car back. You can complete the first half of the retention process on the DVLA website. The details you will need include:

The registration number you want to keep
Your postcode (where the car is registered)
The document number from the V5C registration certificate (which will be sent to you in our letter approximately four weeks before the end of your lease)
If you intend to add the plates to your next Motability Scheme vehicle, you should ask your new dealer if they can do this for you. It’s a good idea to speak to the dealer as far in advance as possible.

If you do not wish to keep your personalised registration, please contact our Customer Services team on 0300 456 4566 as soon as possible to confirm that you are happy to relinquish your rights to the plate. If you choose this option, we will sell the car at the end of your lease with your personalised number plate on it, resulting in you losing the right to display this number plate on a car in the future.

Speak to the dealer when ordering if they can transfer it.. All is good. if not you’ll have to remove it on retention before you exchange and have the plates made up and then have it put onto the new car.

Either way the fee need’s to be paid to remove the plate. The fee is currently £80.

I had issues with mein due to honda being hacked and having no access to dvla directly, so i had to get a standard plate put on 1st and Mb put it on no issue at all. All  was done over the phone to mb,  luckily for me the dealer made me up the plates for free to put on. I hazard a guess if you was to get them yourself you’d need to ask mb to send you the current v5 with the new reg on..
