      Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to see what everyone thought of the new Golf?

It seems quite nice to me, but I was hoping for a better spec, maybe something like the new GTD?

Anyone heard anything about it? Or recommend any other good hatchback alternatives?

Saw new shape yesterday, very underwhelming rear. The new Leon is better looking, but only my opinion…

I’d love to see if the new gtd came on the scheme eventually and there’s not a lot on YouTube on the new gtd or gti I’m not too sure if they are even released yet but look good from what I have seen so far

The gtd used to be on the scheme but it seems to me like motability are moving away from diesels so the 1.5etsi r line might be the highest spec we see. Which to be fair, is the top spec once you take away the performance models.
I wasn’t convinced with the golf 8 at first but now that I’ve seen more pictures I like the looks and the interior looks good too. The golf has been highly praised in the motoring world for years and it’s box style means it’s easier to get in/out than some other hatchbacks.

If I was looking for a hatchback right now the Golf would probably be top of my list along with the Leon. Similar cars but the Leon is a bit more sporty. I also think the 1 series hatchback isn’t too bad AP wise so if you don’t have too much difficulty getting in/out of a low car then that would be worth a look too. I’ve had Golfs and Leon’s in the past so can speak for them but I don’t have much experience with any other hatchbacks.

Rox recently took delivery of a rather kick-ass Honda Civic (go back about 9 pages and see “Finally Picked Up The New Car! WOW wow WOW”).  That might float your boat.

Been looking at a new golf and currently have a Gtd.

Obviously I’d like to keep existing one but that is not an option as already extended.

Talking to VW probably going to be next year before gti/gtd make it to market and dealer didn’t have any more info. R LINE is available but none made it to the showroom yet. Downside is heated seats etc are extras so pushes the cost up.

With my disability affecting my dexterity the lack of buttons and knobs is a problem, not keen on the touch control for heating etc.

Certainly compared to the mk7 the mk8 front is rather bland imo but certainly a nice car.

As said you’ll have a long wait before the GTI and GTD arrive over here.

It will be well worth the wait though the new golf is a nice step up in interior design and tech.

I am well liking the 1.5l turbo dohc vtec 182 bhp honda civic sport, had it for a month now, done 500 miles..

It is very low and they do other engines and trims but they didn’t interest me this time.

Look imo no car is perfect but compared to the golf, i did have the 1.6 tdi match edition.

You get alot as standard on the civic but it drives so great as well.. The cvt was my main worry but it’s not a worry at all. it’s so smooth when just Driving in normal but put it in sport and it’s alot more responsive and lively and use the paddles and it’s a roaring rocket and the sound it makes is addictive. The ride is not as firm as i thought it would be being the sport but the car handles so well. I am so glad i didn’t cancel it.

The adaptive cruise and tech on all cars it can have issues where it thinks something bad will happen and it trys to brake but it also has driver cut in protection and on the golf that always caused an issue but on the honda sensing it something gets that wrong and lifts off but then the car decides not to cut in and then resumes or you can put your footdown. I use the acc alot..

Well worth getting a test drive imo if you afetr a decent sized hatch also the boot is a great size 450l i think, the one downside is it has a drop down alot more than the golf.

I had to order back in jan so a golf 8 was not an option and there are certain things i just don’t like about it. Now i seen vids on it on youtube. the 1.5 tsi only has 150 bhp and i’d not get a match again as the seats are not good for me and my bad back. The wheel look naff and the front wtf was they thinking with the slider. honda put back the volume knob and climate buttons so is great. The infotainment is ok and 8 speakers as standard give a decent sound not as good as bmw or mercedes but as a car i am very happy.

it’s deffo put a smile on my face and i hope my son is looking down from the brightest star, saying yes dad I like it alot. Soon it will be 3 years since he passed and i’m still sufferring ptsd from it all. But this car has really made a huge difference to my mood.. It’s for him and why i went for the sporty version over the more efficient cheaper Ap versions.

I’m with Rox and others on the power factor. Golf seems low in power-to-weight ratio. So, as ever, providing you can get in and out comfortably, I’d be seriously tempted by the Honda. Moreover, as a fan of rear-wheel-drive, if I’ve got to have front-drive then I’ll have something seriously front-drive like the Mini 3-door I received a few months back. Had I been looking for a Golfish 5-door hatch (rather than mad overpowered shopping trolley) then I’d probably have gone for the Clubman.
