Glis guy, I haven’t bought a car in over 30 plus years, either company cars or/and leasing. I see no financial benefit to me to purchase any car outright, to me after working out the figures, buying is a pit which all costs are put onto me, with high initial outlay, high depreciation and a car at the end which I can either lose more money by trading it it, or having to sell with no time limit. with lease, I know what residual is in the car against the gov. Now I don’t agree that the choice of cars is poor, there is a great choice unless you want a rubbish BMW or Mercedes (I have had both as company cars and wouldn’t waste my own money agin on these two brands personally) We do have cars not on the scheme for useage reasons, the wife needs a 4×4 for her equestrian work, and the lad needs a car to build his NCB up on as well as independence whilst at Uni. As I used to work at JLR, I get still, discount of f JLR cars and the same for BMW funnily enough as they have one of my pensions. However, today, I do not carry out the miles I used to drive, so a BEV suits my needs. What people decide to spend their money (and pip ) on is their decision surely? PIP is not means tested, nor should it be, as regardless of your financial situation, the extra requirements of a disability are the same. Everyone has to cut their cloth the way they can, sone need extra financial help, such as the Motability grant, or choose a car with a deposit you can afford.
Interesting post. What you have exposed is that your decisions are based on perceptions and not facts. You admit that you haven’t bought a car in over 30 years, yet you write off that option based upon inaccurate perceptions that it’s a more expensive option than leasing. Conversely, I can speak from personal experience of having bought many cars privately not just for myself but for my wife and daughters (I still do). I gave you the example of the BMW but an even more recent experience was a Hyundai, which I bought new for one of my daughters. Total ownership costs over the whole life of the car were significantly less than half what the cost would have been had it been sourced through Motability. I completely agree that everyone is free to make their own choice. I’ve never suggested anything different. I’m simply pointing out that you frequently mention that Motability is the cheapest option whereas I am saying that if leasing is your only route to a new car then yes it is, but buying can be cheaper and sometimes by quite a margin. Interesting and quite telling comment that you write off ‘rubbish’ BMWs and Mercedes, yet happily use cars from JLR, a brand that consistently features in last place in every reliability survey. Again, perception versus facts. Finally I have no idea why you have raised the subject of PIP not being means tested. I have never suggested that it should be and would strongly disagree with any proposal to do so.
I think he’s on the wind up mate.

Went yesterday to see. £7,995 plus £2,500 for the tech pack+
In my personal view the car is bigger than ID5, especially its boot – can’t think of a wheelchair getting nicely into ID5 nor it doesn’t have electric driver sit as with the tech pack+
Alternative Enyaq 80 for £5,229 doesn’t have same technology and comfort as in Mach E with Tech+. When you add that pack in Skoda plus sunroof, you will go beyond £10,500.Sadly they don’t have Tesla’s Model Y – it is much cheaper than any of the above and funnier to drive.

Just done a quote on a 2021 JAGUAR XF PORTFOLIO 3.0l with Comprehensive cover starting from 23 April 2023. £100 voluntary excess. £379 age 56

On Friday before I went away for the weekend, you were telling me that I should get a BEV and that I was looking at BEV total mileage wrong?
Today I read “However, today, I do not carry out the miles I used to drive, so a BEV suits my needs” and “the wife needs a 4×4 for her equestrian work”, which happens to be a gas gussling Range Rover. ?
Now tell me your BEV will do 240 miles without stopping to charge at 60-70+mph three quaters of the way?
Getting a discount because youve worked at JLR or through your pension provider, surely your in a prime position to buy a car rather than lease!

I’m always amazed at some of the insurance figures some people mention. My BMW 5 series was only costing me £250 a year, fully comp with protected No Claims and a low excess. We live in a low risk area, which obviously helps.

I sold it a few years back Kezo, but it was a 2015 520d Luxury Auto, OTR just over £40k. Thinking about it, I previously had a second hand BMW 750i Sport (4.4 litre V8) and that was only about £400. I think the fact that we don’t live in a city and our cars are garaged at night must help (plus my driving record of course ?) ?

See! That’s what I keep telling people ? though between us that’s mostly luck.
For your curiosity, direct line accepted my 8 year Motability no claims which was a pleasant surprise. Insurance is just a dark art.

Well done. I believe that most insurers will honour it nowadays, but with most quotes being done online not all sites have an easy way to indicate this ?.

For a 2021 530d M sport 20+ NCD protected etc I’m getting £309. The weird bit, if I don’t tick advanced driver option, it knocks just under £40

That is odd. My last company car was a 530d. I wanted to buy it when I left but, a bit like Motability, the price they were asking for it was far too much, so I bought a 2nd hand 7 Series instead! I actually preferred the 5 Series to the 7 Series, so I sold the 750i after a year (making a profit) and got another 5 Series!

I like the 5 series myself. the last one been a 530d business edition back in 2010.
