    Which Mobility Car

The sales for 2020 against the previous years:

To be honest, it has surprised me that they have managed as well as they have in such a troubled year. The first quarter of 2021 could be a problem too.

      2017 – 220 088
      2018 – 215 301
      2019 – 228 406
      2020 – 197 731

Is this less customers or simply more lease extensions?

      Hopefully the latter.

I would think more towards lease extensions myself

Unless they have on the list a BMW X1 2.0D AWD replacement I will keep mine on an extension.

Will also consider coming out of Mobility if I can’t drive what I want. The choices are getting less and less.

We extended ours last year. It seemed pointless to pay out a large AP for a car we would hardly use. Have only covered about 3000 miles in the last year.

My current car is almost perfect for my disability and while I say” almost perfect” had the dealer not pulled the wool over my eye’s or should I say damn well lied I would extend the lease on this car but I was promise by the dealer that the model I was getting had an electronic handbrake with full auto hold much like the VW version but it hasn’t.

Not having those things has made driving for me a chore over the past two years and a half and is now going to cost me more in AP to put that little, but great deal for me, right.

So my thinking too is folk are extending and not so much leaving and the year long lockdown is having its effect too as to having no point in renewing the car plus of course delivery times and price increases.

The World is heading for one hell of a recession, though I do hope I got that wrong but with World leaders with their heads stuck up their backsides I think its going to go that way.

Almost certainly lease extensions I should think. Very difficult to properly research cars last year and even between lockdowns dealer service was minimal. Not many people would be happy ordering a new car with just a 15 minute test drive. Decide in haste, repent at leisure! We are due to order our next car at the end of March but will most likely extend our current lease, partly as the current choice is poor and also because we can’t research properly.

Glos Guy, that raises a very interesting point. If Motability have taken orders for nearly 200 000 cars that have been poorly researched, this will presumably lead to a host of early terminations which is very expensive for Motability, as we know the greatest loss to the value of a new car is driving it away from the forecourt. Is this a contributing factor into the increase in AP’s, assuming that Motability will have had to factor this in to the costings?

That is indeed a very interesting question. My assumption is that a very large proportion of Motability customers simply renew the same car that they presently have, so probably don’t even worry about a test drive. There seem to be a number of people in our village who I am pretty certain are Motability customers and every 3 years like clockwork a new version of their previous car appears. I don’t think that those of us who frequent this forum are necessarily typical Motability customers, in that we are mostly quite into our cars and enjoy debating and experiencing lots of different cars. For most people a car is a means of getting from A to B and brand loyalty tends to prevail. For many of us a car is a lot more than that. However, a few members in recent months have either had to change their cars or others have received new cars and, by the questions and feedback, seem to be regretting their decision already, so you may well be on to something. Clearly early returns add to the operating costs and reduce profits, especially as (for reasons best know to Motability) they don’t allow returned cars to be recycled to other customers.

At the moment I’d be getting the same car so I’d look at extending instead of £3750 advance payment plus extras

Your point Glos Guy would make an interesting read, how many people get the same car who in theory could extend but aren’t aware?

If it wasn’t for this forum I’d not be aware of lease extensions and I would simply replace the car every three years

Good point James. I suspect that very few are aware, but some people are very keen to get a brand new car every 3 years regardless, and I suspect that those of us who pay the upper end of the AP scale are a relatively low percentage. For those happy with cars with low AP’s and don’t add any extras (I’m guessing, but probably the majority) then they would probably renew every 3 years without even thinking about it. TBH, we are usually very keen to renew as we like a change every few years, but the combination of lockdown and ever decreasing choice has made us think that we might extend. However, we wouldn’t do so with the intention of keeping the car the full 2 years. The advantage of extending is that you are then free to order a new car at any time within that 2 years, so if a new car comes on the scheme at any time you can go for it immediately, rather than the anxiety of waiting for a fixed order date, by which time the car might have vanished!

we too have just extended,  mainly due to not really anything standing out to warrant change and those that may be of consideration im not able to Kick the Tyres of, narrowing down the choice is the part i find enjoyable, i would be happy with another like for like change (Tucson) but having paid around £2100 Ap and having only coverd around 18000 miles apart from maybe a hoover and a polish i see no point in paying another 2-3 thousand Ap to get the same vehicle. plus with a noticeable facelift due the decision was made to extend, Motability even with the lock downs have continued with their Targeting the one million eligible but not on the scheme with another 10,000 leaflets/packs sent out via DWP which im sure help keep the sales up, the percentage to retail sales growth is at a high at present.

18,997Scheme vehicle registrations in December 2020
14.3%of UK registrations in December 2020 were for Scheme vehicles

I guess I am fortunate only being half way into my lease. Hopefully by then things might have settled down, regarding Covid. Most I would hope have by then received both injections and and Booster jabs. Only time will tell.

I think the tapering off in numbers  is understandable & to be expected in the current climate.

clearly the covid impact – with many extending their existing leases & also delays in logistics in manufacturing / delivering vehicles.  I also think the impact of DLA to pip reviews & new pip claims reducing the number of eligible people is definitely a contributory factor 🙁

I have only extended my lease once due to a delay in a new car but apart from that I’ve had completely different vehicles each time I have ordered.

unfortunately, I’ve had to do two early lease terminations for different, and obviously very relevant,  reasons.

I think there’ll be further reductions in Motsbility sales this year too – again with covid & lockdown etc..
