Motability Insurance Query?

Question regarding Motability insurance. My disabled wife has recently applied for a Motability vehicle for which I will be a named driver and I will be the allocated main driver. I also own my own vehicle which is an old vehicle and this is insured in my name, my policy entitles me to drive other vehicles with the owners consent.

My concern with the Motability vehicle is that it is only to be used for the purpose for the registered disabled owner. Is this an insurance condition? If so will I be able to use the Motability vehicle under my insurance cover?

This scenario will not happen often. I just want clarification if this is acceptable?

Hi there.  Your personal insurance won’t cover the Motability car, the only permitted drivers are those on the policy.  Your other question is one that pops up often.  Yes, it is for the disabled persons benefit, but, say for instance you were using the car to commute to your workplace; this is a benefit to your wife, you are providing income.

No doubt there will be more replies, but the best place for information is Motability, you’ll find them very helpful.

Motability have to make the comment about it being for the disabled persons benefit in order to comply with their block VAT disability exemption. The reality is somewhat different though.

There will be hundreds of thousands of customers where the Motability car is the only car in the household. We are one of those households. My wife can no longer drive so it would be utterly pointless having two cars. There are plenty of times when I use the car without my wife with me and not all of these journeys could be deemed to be of benefit to her (although she might say that having a break from me IS beneficial 😂).

As this topic comes up regularly on this forum, and some people are very insistent that every journey must be directly for the benefit recipients benefit, I called Motability to discuss our situation when debating whether to stay in the scheme or leave. They reassured me that the policy is designed to avoid blatant abuse (such as a family member getting the car through someone else’s allowance but the user lives elsewhere and rarely, if ever, takes the disabled person out in it) but in the case of a couple living together with one car you can use it in exactly the same way as you would a sole privately owned car. As @Carmad rightly says, this can even include the spouse of the disabled person using the car for commuting.

So, in your scenario, you can drive the Motability car whenever you like and you will be covered under their insurance (as long as you are a named driver).

Agree with Carmad, keep your own insurance running on your own car; this is unrelated to your being a named driver on the Motability policy.

For information I am insured on my wife’s Motability car for business use too (I own and run a cat care and sitting business). As Carmad said, this is regarded as beneficial to the Motability customer as I’m bringing income into the household.

😂 I didn’t know that you could also extend the insurance to cover business use. That’s helpful for people like yourself 👍

Yep business use for me too, car in Mrs Joe’s name but I ran a business and occasionally needed car for business, we were going to come off scheme but Royal Sun (as it was then) agreed to add business use for me.

I think the guy in my street last night in a brand new Skoda motability car delivering food wasn’t to worried about the use of the car.

My son is 25 tomorrow and dying to drive his new Mach-E which is sitting on the drive. Rang Direct Line asking if he can be put on the insurance from midnight to be told no you’ll have to call back tomorrow after 8am. When you take out private insurance with them you stipulate when you want your insurance to start before the date, so why is it different for us.
