MOT

    Gee

I’m sure there’s a perfectly reasonable answer to this question and if there is i apologise for my stupidity.

I recently just received an email from Motability informing me that i must arrange an MOT for my current vehicle in the days leading up to the end of my lease which is imminent.

So, instead of one trip to my dealer to hand over my current car and drive off in my new car i will first have to make another trip to my dealer for an MOT.

Having two good health days in quick succession is a rarity for me consequently there’s a fair chance that i may not be well enough to drive on one of those occasions.

My question: Does anyone know why an MOT cannot be done on the handback day?

      Thank you.

This is speculation Gee, but Motability must have that in place as an agreement with the dealers so as to avoid issues past your lease end. For example, if there were any parts that needed sorted to get a pass then the dealer would be left with that issue, and some of them could end up costing money. If they needed to replace tyres or windscreen they’d be out of pocket. If there are tyres needed then you have to take the car to kwikfit to get it done under the scheme, cutting the dealers out of the loop. Also, although not in your case by the sound of it, not everyone takes the car back on the date of lease end and having multiple rules of who is responsible would add a layer of complexity that isn’t necessary, hence keeping it with the customer. It makes sense as a policy, not so much for the individual needing to make multiple journeys. Remember you can get the MOT done a month (less a day) before the expiry, so if you’ve enough time left in your lease you could do the MOT a week or two early and not have to make consecutive trips in quick order. In fact it’s better to do that just incase you need to take the car elsewhere to resolve any issues. Also, if you have family or friends that could help you, remember you can add them to your insurance. You don’t need to be there when they MOT or service your car. ?

As it is the first MOT, you can have it done 3 months before the handback date.

MB advise getting the car MOT’d before handback day.

I am not sure, but if the car is not MOT’d on handback day, will that not affect the 250 good condition bonus??

I dont know, but its better to get it done well before handback day.

We all have good and bad days, but keep asking questions if you dont know.

Again, I am not sure about this, but if you phone your dealer and ask them to pick the car up, MOT it and drop it off?

Again, I dont know of this is standard, but nothing wrong with asking.

I’m taking mine in 3 weeks before, back to the main dealer in case there’s any issues which warranties would sort. It’s unlikely, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. It’s already quite a stressed period when you swap your car. Nice, but a bit fraught. I wasn’t aware that you could do it 3 months before with a first MOT, that’s good.

If your car or WAV is on a three-year lease, it will need an MOT test certificate roughly two months before the end of your lease If you’re interested in extending your lease, you’ll still need an MOT done within the last three months of your original end date and before you hand your vehicle back or extend your lease.

So you have plenyty of time before you hand back your car. When your car is in for its MOT you can either wait or Motability will provide you with a taxi back and forth or a freind or family can do it if you put them on the insurance. There is also a possibility you will be allowed to take it Krapfit if you asked Motability.

1 – it may be beyond the 3yr limit before your new car arrives

2 – If your vehicle failed its MOT, you would have to delay collection of your new vehicle

3 – Motability want to have their paperwork in order (your file) prior to handover day

Also on the MOT they do an inspection along with photograph of the vehicle so they can decided which avenue to dispose of the vehicle at the end of the lease. Whether it be via their traders only website MFL Direct or via Auction.
