Mazda CX-60 – Any thoughts?

Now that the Q2 prices have settled down, I did my usual quarterly ‘search’ on the Motability website to see, out of interest, what I would be going to look at if we were due to change now. Whilst it’s fair to say that there’s a few that might tick the ‘needs’ box (e.g. Kuga, Tucson, CX-5, Qashqai, X-Trail), none would get me excited or tick the ‘wants’ box.

I stumbled across one car that I’d never even heard of, the Mazda CX-60, which is bigger than the CX-5. Like most people, I get fed up with Motability continually categorising compact & small SUVs as ‘Large SUVs’, but the CX-60 seems to be a mid size SUV, more akin to a BMW X3 size car and, unless I’ve missed it, I don’t think there’s been any conversation about this car on the forum?

Unfortunately, it’s only available on the scheme as a PHEV at £6,995 to £7,995. About a year ago I was thinking that we might go PHEV next time, but I’m not sure that they make sound financial sense anymore, now that the APs on the scheme are so high for them. However, this looks like a decent sized SUV and whilst I don’t particularly like the exterior styling of Mazda SUVs, their interiors are a step up in quality from the budget brands that are now dominant on the scheme and, size wise, this looks like it could be good for us.

I’ve read one review of this car (albeit in diesel form) and it was OK but not great. Has anyone had a look at the CX-60 and, if so, what were your thoughts?

Saw one next to the CX-5 i was looking at a couple weeks ago, obviously wasn’t on the scheme then so didn’t spend a great amount of time looking at it.

Interior is a step up from the CX-5, this is on par with the likes of BMW now.

Exterior and side profile it looks lovely, not the best looking rear (like most of the Mazda’s it looks a bit too egg shaped). The CX-60 looks massive compared to the CX-5 even though it’s only about 5 inches longer.

Had a look around one whilst ordering my CX-5 Homura and I really liked it. Quite a big, brutish looking thing but with a really classy cabin. Definitely a premium feel that could take on a BMW.

I didn’t think it would make the scheme and with the AP’s so far, I’m not sure if they’ll get much in the way of sales. The diesel version with an AP of 4/4.5k would be very tempting but unlikely.

Interesting. Thanks. I’ll keep it on my list as a possible to look at if it’s still on the list in 12 months time. As has been said, the AP, when added to the sacrificed benefits, is a massive chunk of money that I can do a lot with in the private market. If nothing else, it’s encouraging to see a mid size SUV join the scheme, rather than the multitude of small ones that we have at present. Hopefully we might see some more additions in that class by the time we change.

Based on April’s rates, the higher spec model on a 3yr lease would cost £19149 or £532 a month. A 5yr lease would cost £26585 or £443 a month. Take a grand off for the lower spec models or £504 a month for 3yrs or £426 a month for 5yrs.

Thats alot of money, infact eye watering and nothing to show for it at the end!

Maybe a petition for the massively increased Advanced Payments might help, even if it’s just to raise concern..

                    Just a maybe though?

Yes and that, of course, is the problem with all Motability cars now. Even with a low AP, the outlay is now huge and the PIP benefits would go a long way towards a private purchase. I’ve just watched the YouTube reviews that you posted (thanks). I was struck by the fact that in several areas they describe it as being “almost as good as a BMW”. We might be tempted to take the money and run and get another proper BMW (or a Porsche if my wife has her way) ? Thankfully we have a year before we need to start making some decisions and we are quite happy with our current BMW until then.
