They should already have a copy of the one you had to provide them when you ordered the car.

You should though report it lost to DVLA and get a new one sent

In my experience the dealer will request a copy of your current licence irrespective of having received a copy for your original order. Whether that is though procedure or laziness in locating the previous copy from Head Office, I don’t know.

This happened to me . Lost mine last year . Applied for a new one , now 6 months ago . Apparently late because of COVID and still waiting . I knew my drivers number so that was enough to order new vehicle! Hope this helps !

Dealers can, as you can do, go to the DVLA website

              https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

and obtain your driving licence details.

That’s what car hirers do but I’ve always found that dealers / Motability are over strict for seeing the actual driving licence. I think that’s just down to them not having realised were in the 21st century now and everything is a data stream.
I hoping I don’t have trouble when I order in July because I reach 70 years old mid October and my handover, should it be on time, is the end of October and driving licenses have to be renewed every 3 years once you hit 70 so a great time for ordering a car when they don’t except the electronic procedure that everybody else does, or, do they except it?

I ordered a Mini only last week and had to email drivers licence to the dealer.

                    Hi Ronster

Did you send a photocopy of the actual license in the email or the DVLA electronic version?

                      Chris,

The reason car hire companies (and Motability dealers etc) want to see the driving licence is to provide a form of photo ID – so they can verify the person stood in front of them is infact the person to whom the driving licnce relates. (The ‘computer verification part’ is just to check on licence validity/points etc).

Take this in the context of where someone can access another persons documents (award letters, household bills etc) such as flats with communal mail facilities (where all mail gets posted through a single letterbox), It is easy to steal enough documents to form an identity, but the photo on the driving licence should match the person presenting it and is a final ‘double check’.

Yes, I know it isn’t always the allowance recipient who is the ‘driver’ in the case of Motability, but at some point in the ordering process, the driving licence of a ‘nominated driver’ must be produced so that person is ‘photo verified’ as it were and details recorded.

Obviously in Covid-19 times, Motability have relaxed the ordering process and scanned documents, including a driving licence is permissible, but they are obviously prepared to take the risk – as most scanned driving licence photos are more or less silhouettes!

Just ran my details through the DLVA site and can see why Motability / dealers will not accept the online printout, it’s because that form does not show any driving restriction codes that many of we disabled driver have on our licenses for instances I have a code for “steering wheel, controls and brake” adaptions that don’t show up on that DVLA system as far as I can see.

Sorry Dave I didn’t see your post but yes that’s the other reason.

My wife and myself did not have to provide driving licence when ordering my new car also they didn’t even bother to look at award letter they said because I was ordering a vehicle from the same company as my last one they had everything on their database that was needed.

                            Hi Robert

That dealer could be in so much trouble for that as it doesn’t matter what they got on their system because your award could be changed at anytime so can your driving license.

Well as I said . I lost my license. I was changing from Ford to Seat so new dealer didn’t have my details. I told him my driving license number along with my other details and everything went through as I was talking with him!

My wife’s 10 year updated driving licence dropped on the door mat a few days ago, it took 10 days from filling out the form and sending it off.

Two options..form from post office or on line , if you have a current passport you can apply on line and they can cross reference your details and use the passport photo.

I’ve learned something today with this thread?
Having just had a quick look at what you need to take with you when you order a car I noticed under the paragraph “Final checks” it says about “driving license restriction codes” as I mentioned above and one of the codes on my license has never been used as it was found to be not needed.

When I first became disabled I did not know what was needed for myself to drive a car so some things were “assumed” and one of those assumptions was a small lever on the hand-brake lever was needed to make it easier to push the button in on the hand-brake but at hand over of my first Motability car, 4 cars ago, it was found I did not need the button.

Now today reading the Motability guff I see that they recommend calling DVLA to have the code removed (code 20 modified braking system) as this explains why I had a bit of trouble when I ordered a car in 2014 ending with a three way conversation between myself, Motability and DVLA so will give them a ring in the week to sort it.

So thanks guys as this thread has help me more than it helped the OP. ?
