Regarding notice, you need to call Motability and discuss it with them, you can pretty much end the lease whenever you want (there may be a financial penalty if ending early).

If you have got to the end of your 3 year contract then you can end at any time and you will get the GCB once the car has been inspected (usually takes a few days).

I did this August last year and because I’d been a named driver on another policy (even though I had had a claim with RSAM so zero no claims bonus) I still managed fully comp protected for £440 for a 2L car so very reasonable.

Hi Neil. Have you thought about about applying for a grant for the advance payment for your next car before you decide to leave the scheme? I received a grant of £1995 for the full advance payment for my Volkswagen Tiguan just over a year ago. I need an automatic and the Elegance model spec because it had electric boot opening. I explained how bad my back is, all my medical problems and the Motability grants department were very kind and helpful. It wouldn’t have been possible for me to get the car without the grant and I’m very grateful for it.

I know the advance payments are very high, I just don’t want people to feel they have no choice but to leave the scheme because the advance payments are unaffordable when it may be possible to get help with a grant. It is worth a try speaking to the grants department because they can only say yes or no.

Is it possible for you to extend your lease on your current car? Motability can extend your lease up to the five years but it depends on your mileage. This might be worth considering if you haven’t already extended your current three year lease, you would be happy to keep the car you currently have a while longer and your mileage isn’t very high.

I will take a look at all options,

I don’t want to leave but the deposits are scarey !

You might hsvevbettervkucj with the graves team.

i applied and was offered a grant when I wanted to change early – I’d done my detailed research / various test drives and had my own short list based on my access, health / disability  and personal needs.
i gave my shortlist to the graves team & they then came back with two vehicles they proposed which weren’t on my shirt list and they didn’t meet my disability and access needs – also the grant amount can only up to the amount of grant allocation, if AP is with the grant amount allocated. If however the vehicle you want has a very large AP the grant can cover up to 50% of the full AP but if 50% of the AP is more than the grant allocated – then you are not allowed to use the grant.

so I was stuck with the car I wanted to terminate early because the two cars they suggested did not meet my needs & I couldn’t afford the AP’s of any of the final three cars in my shortlist.
whilst a grant system is very much needed & appreciated, the charity arm that runs it need to be reviewed & more fit for purpose – like motsbility operations itself.

Give the grants team a call.

I got the car I asked for as I said all the others weren’t suitable and I also backed up my claim with a GP’s letter.

I left the scheme in January 2021.

ive been paraplegic since 1985 and only used the scheme for a 3 year period then. God knows why i went back in 2017.

Anyway i brought a 2018 bmw 320d and had lost my no claims as it had lapsed returning to the scheme. I insured with admiral as they were the cheapest. Myself ,52 and my wife both to drive fully comp is £250 a year. No accidents,i have an sp30.  I thought it was pretty good. i paid £270 last year.

                    cheers.

I think a lot of people on here over-estimate the benefits of Motability. When you reach a certain age, insurance becomes dirt cheap. They talk about the cost of tyres, servicing etc yet then go on to say they only do a nominal mileage a year. Yes, for some people it’s worry free but I think it can be worry free going private for a lot of people. Fair play to you gillan.

Owning your own car seems to be getting more popular now

Main attraction imo is that the nominated drivers needs are also met and are never questioned.

As you get older your mileage may drop and modern cars are lasting longer

                          Food for thought?
