I was really hoping this vehicle would be coming onto the scheme after it’s initial launch and got quite excited after a couple of dealers said that it may appear in Q3, but having just read several reviews it seems like it’s a bit of a turnip!
With reported fuel economy of just mid to high 20’s, a terrible gearbox, awful ride and clunky screen tech I’m just not sure now!

I’m suprised about the gearbox as they are made by Asin and are usually very good with strong torque converters, as they can handle alot of power so good for towing.

Yep, I was surprised too and if it had just been somewhere like the Top Gear website review I would have probably ignored it, but nearly all car sites say the same.
The general comments seem to say a slow or unresponsive gearbox, as well as the other stuff.

In all fairness, I take most motoring journalist reviews with a pinch of salt and go out and test drive myself, where more often than not it’s no where near what the review’s state. I question whether some reviewer’s even do a proper test drive in the vehicle, a most a quich heavy footed blast round the block!

Considering it’s a hunk of a car, the size of a Landrover the mpg isn’t that bad considering it’s rather small engine size. That said Ive read its good for 50mpg at a 70mph and mid 30’s around town etc, which is actually better than my 2wd 1.6t petrol Tucson and that a smaller car, with less bhp and torque.

Auto Express makes a solid point saying: The gearbox doesn’t appreciate being rushed, but a more patient approach will be rewarded by smooth progress – much the same, in fact, as you’ll find in any of the new generation of large SUVs featuring smaller petrol motors instead of good old-fashioned 2.0-litre diesels. The Asin gearbox is well known for it’s go anywhere torque, rather than all out speed anyway.

A haphazourdous, slow infotainment isn’t Ssangyong/KGM specific, you have only got to look at the VW group’s MB 3 & 4 software for a similar experience however, thesr are often fixed by software updates. I also think manufacturers try to put to many functions on the infotainment screen rather than utilsing physical buttons.

If you like it and it rejoins the scheme, book an extended test drive and come to your own conclusion. That said if it rejoins its likely to do so as the electric version, given the way Motability are going.
