Hi,
@Joss my old Acer laptop is slowing down and showing its age, I did buy a new Acer laptop as recommended by Which from Curry’s in January it was plagued with advertising and give up the ghost after a few days.I did purchase a new windows single use package (I have the code) which hopefully I can use on my next laptop, I would like an Apple but to be honest I only use Excel and the internet, also I belive certain brands are worse for advertising.

Lesson of the day – don’t trust which ?
You can remove/disable many adds from the lock screen and start menu and elsewhere. Rather than me making a mistake or confusing you, follow the link. (win10 isn’t much different)

November 5, 2023 at 1:59 am #241756Hey @0scarmax
To be honest most laptops are loaded with bloat ware. (Software bloat is a process whereby successive versions of a computer program become perceptibly slower, use more memory, disk space or processing power, or have higher hardware requirements than the previous version, while making only dubious user-perceptible improvements or suffering from feature creep)
Not only that, windows it’s self is loaded with bloat ware. Unwanted programmes that you wll never use. Not forgetting windows tracking and spying on you.
So what can you do about this?
Well take me for instance. I use a modified windows 11 Pro install on all my compters and laptops. This means most of the bloat ware and spyware is removed from windows. I also us Pro version of win 11 because this give you access to things like Group policy (Group Policy is a feature of the Microsoft Windows NT family of operating systems that controls the working environment of user accounts and computer accounts. Group Policy provides centralized management and configuration of operating systems, applications, and users’ settings in an Active Directory environment. A set of Group Policy configurations is called a Group Policy Object.) Basically it allow you as admin to say how programs work or are accessed by the user.
For now watch this video and think, Can I do this? Then get back to me, here.

We upgraded our laptop, a while back, it was so difficult to use, almost like it was to busy doing its own thing, like it had issues with people trying to use it, we simply didn’t use it lol..
For us proved a waste of money, Mrs aj uses a company Dell most mornings from home, even she got fed up with the new thing..

Windows 10 has more bloatware than 11 but, 11 still has its fare share. However you can follow the above link or video to remove them.
In short S mode you can only install apps from Microsoft and can only use the Edge browser.
Win 11 Pro is another option as it would be cheaper than buying a new laptop only to have the same problem.
November 6, 2023 at 7:14 pm #242131Just replaced my still perfectly running 9yr old Acer Aspire i5 win 8 with WIN 11 Acer a315 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1135G7 @ 2.40GHz 2.42 GHz basic mid spec less than £400
Managed by chance to notice a currys short lived glitch and bagged it for the same price as the i3 version saving £ssss
Been dabbling with comps since XP virtual drives partitions running 3 operatng systems on the sam comp
Lost count of friends comps that I brought back to life
Personally would not get anything running less than i5 Intel(R) Core min 8GB Ram as this is the sweet spot for my needs ( never been a gamer )
Firstly yes my new Acer was bloated with crap and its out of the box set up took me 3hrs to unpick/delete/block/set up and make my own
Anything Edge was shut down and replaced with Brave browser allowing me to enjoy all the latest releases if you get my meaning.
Another lesson learnt is to turn off auto microsoft updates
Not to say you should not update but I simply delay and wait and see if any released updates are causing people issues
Usually MS will follow up with another update to fix
Although a constant pain make sure to rejects 99% of isited sites cookies
I use chrome as little as poss emails/Drive/G MailGreat
step by step You tube vids out there showing how to minimis MS tracking
Being wary of sites visited and using free ccleaner will only help
I turn off ( not advising you do the same) windows defender as it can slow down the best of systems
My old 9yr old Acer still runs sweet but as no longer supported by MS it was time for this OAP to upgrade lol
The free PC Decrapifier may well be a good starting point for a novice
Remember to address what is allowed to start up and run on your system
rant over lol
February 18, 2024 at 12:20 pm #258711I have brought a new MacBook Air (M2 2023) 15″, managed to transfer the Microsoft 365 software across, no bloatware, just very poor now.

February 18, 2024 at 1:08 pm #258724I brought it through John Lewis cheaper than Apple plus 24 months warranty, I am going to buy the wife a new 10.9 2022 Apple iPad from John Lewis the price has dropped due the Apple introducing a new model later in the year. her old one is about 7 or 8 years old and only update to iOS 15

February 18, 2024 at 1:24 pm #258728I still build the odd PC or repair/upgrade families/friends laptops, gives me something to do!
Somehow I seem to have ended up with 3 Lenovo laptops!
A Miix520 (2 in 1 detachable tablet/laptop) which only cost me £125!, perfect condition, I5 and 8gb, beautiful paper white full HD screen and a Gen3x4 NVMe drive. I take this one on holidays, nice and light, metal cased.
ThinkPad L380, full aluminium case, 13.3″ full HD IPS screen, I5 and 8Gb, Gen3x4 NVMe drive, picked it up for £80 on ebay!! absolute bargain!.
ThinkBook I5 G4 15.6″ full HD IPS Screen, upgraded to 16Gb, 2x 1Tb Gen4x4 NVMe drives, another new in box eBay purchase about £200 less than retail!
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!
February 19, 2024 at 5:57 pm #258831currently got 3 laptops, all bought 2nd hand from a couple of good sites on the bay i use, ive 2 hp z books; a 14 and a 15.6 with good processors in. and a relatively new to me, acer 17″ which in nice nick too. running win 10 on all; no bloatware in them fortunately.

Download any missing drivers from manufacturers website that way you guarantee no garbage.
As for laptops buy a refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad even used they’re brilliant, cheapish and have rocksolid bullet proof build quality that you just won’t get from an Acer.
You can get a Lenovo T480 i5 8250u, 2TB ssd, 32GB ram, Windows 11 pro for about £380 refurbished.
I always used Lenovo at work and buy them for myself used might look industrial and not pretty but stuff like hinges last forever as long as you avoid the cheaper consumer stuff.
To be honest you’re probably better off doing a fresh windows install, having a tech or yourself clean the crotch gooch out of the laptop cooling system and possibly putting more RSM in it.
Don’t buy an Apple unless you’re already tied to the ecosystem the laptops despite popular opinion are terrible designs, often awful build quality inside and break very easily. Apple often use every excuse to weedle out of warranty claims like shouting water damage, refusing recall work until you turn up with a printout proving there’s a recall. They’re anti competitive and you can’t upgrade anything on modern Macbooks.
