Ioniq 5 Charging Problem

So I took delivery of my lovely Ioniq 5 N Line S on Monday drove away from the dealer quite happy, only to discover when I got home that it would not charge off my Zappi charger. I tried it with neighbours chargers but all I get is charging delayed and no electrical juice being delivered to the car.

I have since returned to the dealer who confirmed that there is no schedules set and there is indeed a problem, as it will charge off DC but not AC. Car booked in tomorrow for investigations so we will see what that brings.

Not the best start but these things happen.

Sounds like ICCU failure. Still occurring even after the facelift, sadly.

I hope it is resolved quickly – at least on MB we get a decent hire car while it’s in the garage.

The dealer has confirmed that a faulty ICCU is indeed the culprit and booked for repair at the beginning of May. Very poor for a car that is literally brand new. Apart from not being able to AC charge the car is absolutely fantastic.

The ICCU is the E-GMP platform’s Achilles’ heel, unfortunately. I hope the replacement proves to be reliable for you.

How are you getting on with your Ioniq 5 N Line S?

Wasn’t really considering ordering one next month, but stopped at an Hyundai dealership and was very pleasantly surprised. Wife also really liked it.

Have read/heard a few horror stories about motor suddenly stopping or power being reduced immediately (e.g. driving at 70mph, but suddenly dropping to 50mph and refusing to go any higher).

There’s been software and hardware recalls trying to replace anything they can blame that isn’t the ICCU, then some parts take bloody months to arrive.

You’d have genuinely thought that they’d have designed a better working version by now.  The car could be unbeatable but that sword of Damocles hanging over every car is letting it down.

the waiting months for parts is a worry. You rarely receive a courtesy/hire car that matches the spec of your own.

@Chris11 It’s always hard to gauge what the chances are of ending up with a “common” fault. Hyundai aren’t going to let a potential customer know what percentage of a certain model have a fault. It’s not just an annoying little fault, like sat nav not working.

Hyundai and sister company Kia don’t seem to be proactive in resolving issues. Long wait for parts to repair cars, but always seem to have enough to build more vehicles to sell.

The N Line S was a very strong contender for me, but I’m really not sure now.

If I’d already ordered, I probably wouldn’t cancel and just hope mine didn’t have the fault.

Hyundai reckon a 2% ICCU failure rate but there are a few people who are convinced it’s more.

It didn’t put me off ordering my own N Line S but I may yet live to regret that haha.

If I do get major issues with the ICCU I’d be very strongly considering handing it back though honestly which would be a shame as I love the car otherwise.

                              Hi,

Ive had my Ioniq ultimate since October 2023. It’s done 25,000 miles and hasn’t put a foot wrong.  I love the car. There are a few niggles but only with “battery preconditioning” and my dislike for the door handles ( not automatic), other than that I am really happy. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending one.

                              Cheers, all the very best

That’s why we went with the Tech Pack on our Ultimate AWD order, to get the automatic door handles and memory seats, then, on delivery of the new version, they included the automatic door handles in the standard Ultimate spec, but removed the comfort seats/memory and put them in another pack…grrrr. The N-Line S is currently the best choice on the scheme regarding kit vs price. Had to have the auto doors handles as my blind wife couldnt find them otherwise.

Then again, the AWD is no longer on the scheme, it’s great in the snow (I live in NE Scotland) and a hoot if you need to “make progress” as my advanced motorcycle instructor used to say.

Fingers crossed on the ICCU issue, might get it, might not…The common rattly boot issue has a TSB from Hyundai to fix, I couldn’t be bothered with the 60 mile round trip dealer hassle so fixed it myself with some velcro on the boot side plastic blocks and a bit of duct tape on the latch hoop (thanks to an American on the Ioniq 5 forum for that one) totally cured it.

So, to give an update – I am pleased to say that the car has had a new ICCU fitted and all is well with the car. I have now done 3000 miles in the car and love it. The head up display is very useful it is very quiet, handles well and is very practical. The ICCU does appear to be a common problem across the EGMP platform.

Thats great news.  They’ve clearly decided to keep spares local instead of held at HQ.

Maybe they have finally caught up with the issue and have more ICCUs available, fingers crossed this is the case, it’s a hassle to have it break, but if fixed quickly it’s an inconvenience. This becomes a huge annoyance to be stuck waiting months for parts – that’s the sort of thing that puts buyers off ever getting the brand again.

Same here. With the amount of issues/niggles I’ve had with my Ariya I really don’t want the same with my next car.

From what I’ve been reading they are now at a failure rate that’s massively lower than originally found.  The main issue, however, wasn’t the ICCU failure but the massive delays in getting a replacement.   There were cases where it was up to 9 months without your car and one poor soul was without his car for nearly 18 months after the replacement failed in the test charge.  It was also a daily occurrence that the Ioniq 5 groups had someone complaining that their car had gone in for the dreaded failure, I’ve not seen such a post in months AND I’ve never had a problem with mine.

If one fails, it appears it’ll be replaced in weeks not months.  So, while not ideal, there is the reassurance that the problems are greatly reduced and replacement times are even more reduced.  I don’t think I’d be too worried about it now, there’s a chance that whatever car you get could just be the unlucky one.
