I need Antivirus software for my desktop and laptop, both run Windows 10. I’ve used Kaspersky for years. Recent reviews are no longer recommending it due to possible links to the Russian government. It needs to be cheap and available on eBay by downloading and purchasing a license. I’m thinking between Norton 360 Deluxe and McAfee Total Protection. Both computers are quite old and slow. Any suggestions or observations?

I run Norton. I bought the 10 user licence for 2 years for £19.99 using a link from PC Pro magazine. I share it will various family members so equates to £1 per PC per year. Bargain ?. Here’s the link:
February 18, 2023 at 7:02 pm #209698Ive used Bitdefender for about three years now. I do not install it on any PC rather on an external hardrive plugged into my HP Proliant and authorise it to check any device on the LAN every week or so. I’ll be getting another VPN soon, now Ive gone back over to Virgin 350.
February 18, 2023 at 7:14 pm #209701Malwarebytes is what I’ve used for many years and it’s never missed anything. Best software out and doesn’t slow things or get upset with other stuff like ms own system. Which is much better nowadays than it used to be. Men premium is the dogs bollocks lol
No idea of costs as I’ve been using it since it was just a little program. I’ve had updates for probably 15 yes all for my original outlay. Ps, you won’t get that now but it is an excellent bit of kit

I can highly recommend Sophos anti virus https://home.sophos.com/en-us#features try the free trial and see what you think, then buy it. I promise that you wont regret it. £37.00 a year. Trust me I know what I am talking about here.
Install it and set preferences. I can assist in any way. once set up that’s it. It then runs in the back ground doing its stuff. Read reviews and see what you think.
Edit: forgot to say sophos only instals a small application on your pc, so minimal drag on resources. The main program runs from Sophos servers.

@Peter Norton does appeal more, I can get a 4 license deal on Amazon for around £9.50.

That Amazon deal sounds decent, if you prefer Norton.

@Jojoe Sophos is around 10 users for their paid version and @joss has a valid point with Bloatware and is the biggest reason I have av on an extrenal hardrive connected to the Proliant and in my case doesn’t make each device run slower.
I’ve had a look, it’s clearly very good, but a little too expensive. I only need 2 licenses, it seems more aimed at pros or business users.

February 18, 2023 at 11:24 pm #209739Another vote not to use Norton, horrible bloatware.
I use Panda Anti Virus and Malwarebytes, also C Cleaner every now and again to clear out rubbish. Put them on every laptop and PC I repair or build for people.
Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

I built a PC back early 2000’s. I then moved over to Dell when I Eleanor my business as I needed the support when things went wrong, their 3 year business warranty was worth it weight in gold. They got me up and running remotely from more than a couple of disasters over the last 20 years.

kinnybit late to the party, but since its inception Microsoft Defender has proved stable and reliable, in these times a 3rd party solution is no longer required for the average user (you’ll note most of the AV companies now include browser protection, android addons and loads of other ‘bloat’ to justify the purchase)
March 1, 2023 at 3:37 pm #213498Okay, the results are in. I went for Norton based on price, the fact I got 5 licenses for £9.90 and the fact I only use the PC’s for a very little time each day. It’s good on 1 of the computers and awful on the other, I’ve removed it from one and am relying on Windows Defender. I’ve also got it on my iPhone, it comes with a VPN. Oddly, it marks the comment section of the MailOnline as dangerous! I do agree! ? I only read it for the sport and motoring section.

March 1, 2023 at 7:01 pm #213525Pleased you’re sorted @Jojoe ?. Under £2 per licence per year is hard to beat. The comments section of any article from The Mail is normally pretty toxic ?.
Asking for advice on which anti-virus / Internet Security Suite is best is like asking which woman you should choose. Everyone will give you a different answer ?.
