Latest electrified concept hints at design of next Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai has taken the wraps off a new plug-in hybrid SUV concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show, giving an indication of what the next-generation Tucson production model could look like.

The South Korean carmaker describes the Vision T as the latest expression of its evolving “Sensuous Sportiness” global design language.

Its side profile is said to “convey a continual sense of speed and forward motion” while a long bonnet and level roofline are other key styling points. The designers have aimed to make the Vision T look as seamless as possible, with all surfaces connected to either trim or light features and a lack of “distinct design boundaries”

At the front, what Hyundai calls a “Parametric Air Shutter” allows air in at lower speeds for powertrain cooling, but can close at higher speeds for greater aerodynamic efficiency. Individual ‘cells’ of the grille move in sequence to create a particularly eye-catching effect on the move.

The grille also features signature headlamps integrated into its design, which remain hidden until the car is started up. Elsewhere, there are oversize satin-chrome alloy wheels with a split five-spoke design, while at the back, the tail-lights follow a prescribed sequence when the car is shut off, with the illuminated Hyundai logo the last part to deactivate.

The car’s charging port is located on the passenger-side rear quarter panel, under a sliding cover. When charging, a ‘BlueDrive’ logo lights up and the status of the battery is indicated by a circular light cluster.

The Vision T follows on from September’s Hyundai 45 – a purely electric concept that also previewed the direction the company plans to take with the design of its future models.

Hyundai’s current plug-in range consists of the Kona Electric SUV, the Ioniq Electric hatchback and its PHEV sibling, the Ioniq Plug-In, with a Kona PHEV on the way.

The next-generation Tucson is likely to be offered with a wide variety of powertrains, possibly including pure electric, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen fuel-cell and internal-combustion.

Looks very similar to a RAV4.
