I am coming off the scheme this year , and was looking at the auto i10 and picanto which both have this box, i could not get a test drive in the auto as no one had one , but i spent a lot of researching on the web and on forums and I would say 75% of the people that drove that box said it was shocking although 25% really liked it, most people said it was slow to change gears and obviously slow to get to speed and you could feel every gear change thing that came up a bit was pulling off from roundabouts and standing starts there could be a slight delay in the box engaging, the AMT is the cheapest type ” automatic gearbox”
in the end I have bought a Dacia Sandero automatic, should arrive near the end of the year and was very surprised how smooth the CVT box is, given I am coming from a DSG box, also the ride was very comfortable in the Dacia , much more roomy than the Hyundai or Kia which on both of them I found the ride comfort pretty hard
are you thinking of getting this car on scheme or private, as much better cars on scheme than the i10 for no or little AP

i hope you find the info useful 🙂
August 1, 2022 at 6:57 am #192441Hi Myself
Really don’t know what to do. Need a really small automatic car because of very awkward parking space.
Currently have Motability Picanto with traditional automatic and low mileage -fine for needs.
Could order new Motability car in December.
Do I ask to extend lease? That gripes a bit as pay same lease for an older car and will have paid capital cost over 5 years.
or, Buy a Hyundai i10 ( order now, ready April, so garage says)with AMT or Aygo X with CVT ( if boot is big enough)
or, Lease either of these cars on Motability.

will have to try both
August 1, 2022 at 9:36 am #192489i like the look of the aygo x but i think the boot is quite small compared to others, not a problem for me it will be more the seat height if i can get in and out ok. havent managed to get out to see one in the flesh so if you do let us know what you think. i am considering it as theres little on the scheme i particularly like and the aygo x private lease seems to be cheaper than mota. will need to crunch some numbers in dec when i can order.
i have the countryman at the moment but its no longer on the scheme and if it does come back i suspect the ap will be rediculous. the only 2 on the current scheme i will look at closer are the kona and the mokka as they are 0 ap on wpms. other than those theres nothing that stands out and says “get me”
August 1, 2022 at 10:01 am #192495Car are you able to test drive or get a ride in the i10 auto? I would highly recommend getting a test drive in a Dacia Sandero automatic, if it could fit in your parking space ?
Aygo X one off the smallest boots in its class and very cramped in back if need to carry passengers.
One thing put me off the Aygo it has the exact same engine as the very first one that came out in early 2000s
August 1, 2022 at 10:46 am #192506As I said to @myself33 a while ago, I took my neighbours picanto (same engine and box) in for a service and it was the worst auto I have ever driven. This quote from car magazine is an understatement:
“If you value your sanity, do not buy the AMT. Standing for automated manual transmission, we truly thought this type of gearbox was on its way out. This gearbox alone would be sufficient to take the i10 from a four-star car to a one-star car.
It’s laughably slow and jerky to shift, up or down. It’s possible to smooth things out a little by lifting off slightly, but it’s so unpredictable that it’s very difficult to modulate this. You can take manual control if you wish – via the shifter, not paddles – but that doesn’t speed matters up.”
My honest advice if you want a auto look elsewhere rather than having buying orleasing on the scheme blind. The new Sandero is worth a look 🙂
@myself33 when do you pick your new car up, as it seems ages ago since we last spoke about it.August 1, 2022 at 11:50 am #192519@kezo, hopefully November the 29th the day my lease ends , last time I spoke to the dealer car is on track to arrive in the UK, in October

Good to hear?
August 1, 2022 at 1:41 pm #192529Sandero very wide for car class 1848mm – same as Audi A4! with turning circle 10.4m
Can’t go much bigger than Picanto with width 1595mm TC 9.4m( i10 or Aygo X would be OK)
August 1, 2022 at 3:14 pm #192541Fiat Panda 1634
Fiat 5001627
VW UP 1641
There’s the Smart EQ fortwo and forfour That could fit into your requirements. However they ony have around 78mile electric range, whitch if your only tootling around town itwould probably be ok.
You say you already have a Picanto, is that auto? If so you will be acustomed to the auto box and its pitfals that would aso be in the i10.
Unfortunately even city cars these days are getting larger, so there isn’t really alot to choose from unfortunately.
August 1, 2022 at 3:27 pm #192549There are quite a few cars similar in size (within 5mm) to the Aygo X (1740mm)
Suzuki Swift 1735mm
mini 1727mm
Mazda 2 hybrid 1745mm
Tiyota Yaris 1745mm
Micra 1745mm
Audi A1 1740mm
Fiesta 1734mm
Hyundai i20 1734mm (less width than the Aygo X)
Peugeot 208 1743mm
Honda Jazz 1694mm

Our Picanto has the traditional 4 speed traditional automatic box. Super to drive and smooth – poor fuel consumption always under 40mpg – not a problem for us. New i10 and Picanto after 2020 have automated manual – good for mpg and emissions but everyone hates driving them or so it seems.
Aygo X beckoning at the moment – perhaps a purchase – cheapest pure in white would be OK if wheelchair fits in sure wife will !!Will give it a look.

The Aygo X is a nice car, with the benif of a little more height for getting in/out.
Don’t for get on a test drive you take it home and try it in your parking spot.
I don’t know what made me think you had a newer model Picanto. I blame the tablets lol.
August 1, 2022 at 4:47 pm #192566I have had dsg and cvt auto gearbox cars and there pro and cons to both really but imo I had no real issues driving them.
Did like the smoothness of the cvt on the honda civic sport i had.
I had to make my move recently to get a suzuki vitara(off the scheme) as the new full hybrid version has an ags gearbox as some have said its automated manual transmission and uselss really imo.
It’s just like driving a manual transmission only worse it having to find a biting point, so is a delay pulling away and it was a big no for me after driving automatic for ages.
Also they go wrong all the time and is a technology that never really took off but is cheaper than a full auto and maybe with supply issues some are adopting them.
What ever you get I’d stay away from those.
