        @glos guy

I dont know if its a first as you say, but that is what I did back in July.

The car was taken off the motability list and i ordered it an it was on my motability website new lease agreement right away.

So, even though its not on the motability search as the car was removed, Motability quite happily approved the new order.

Perhaps its a change in the way Motability Operations are now operating. Buy thats a few people who have done this recently. It certainly wont be happenstance that they are all VW orders.

Very interesting and definitely worth knowing. As I say, in the past it’s always been the case that once it’s off the Motability list it can no longer be ordered – full stop. We’ve had examples of where dealers thought differently and were proved wrong. If this is a change of policy then it’s very good news for those who have their eye on a car and it suddenly disappears off the Motability website. If they can still hot-foot it to a dealer and still place an order then that would be welcomed by many.

Well, something has spooked Motability, with people struggling financially, lack of vehicles and supply line problems. They are probably frightened of losing customers. The long wait times for cars is a drag on their business, people will look elsewhere if Motability cant supply the goods.

There’s been a few changes and more to come I would think.

I sincerely hope so. We want to stay on the scheme, but there’s absolutely nothing of interest at present so, unless things improve, we will be leaving ?

This is my first time on Motability and I’m unable to find what I’d hoped for as well. Am considering looking for a used GTD/alternative now as the difficulty in finding a suitable vehicle is getting stressful.

@Glos Guy,   According to the sales person they put through the application and all approved by motability..  I was sceptical too but at least at the moment everything has all been approved, like I say there are around 100 GTD’s in the country apparently that are either physical cars or to be built very soon..

We were told that the reason the GTD and GTE are on the scheme is likely that there will be a refresh (Although I have seen pictures and you you would struggle to tell them apart at least from the outside), going forward all engines will be at least mild hybrid so they are trying to clear out the stock…

We had the 182bhp 1.5 bhp focus st-line X which we really like and the only thing on the scheme which suited us was another focus but they now only do the 1.0 150bhp so would feel like a downgrade and is basically the same time or the Golf R-line but when you consider the GTD is not that much more the R-line would seem like a let down..

To be fair cars have drastically gone up in price where as the motability allowance has not so its no surprise that what you can get on the scheme is not as good as in previous years.  the GTD we spec’d which is still basic it just has a couple of options is just short of £40k.   VW are also doing a deal that you get £750 off so even though the GTD says its £2799 with the £750 off its actually £2049, motability will pay for the metallic paint, we had to get the winter pack for the heated seats as they really help and the car we found had the uprated alloys.

I just thought I would update this thread as I thought there was no hope after reading this, I think you do need a very good sales persons that actually knows the system, there was a car elsewhere first and we spoke to that sales person to try and get it but he said there was none in the country, that car had literally just sold as it turned out when we went back to our very good sales person and he found another one that we pounced on straight away..

Basically if you want a GTD you are going to have to be very quick and have a good VW sales person but it is possible, well at least so far, I will update this is anything changes..

@MissingSound 7 – If you want a new GTD there are still some out there, you just need a salesperson willing to search the country stock for them and give the sale to another garage which I know is hard for them.  Hence my reason for updating this post so at least hopefully others can go in armed with information that might help them get the car they want..

I appreciate you updating this thread and thanks for doing so. Interesting details provided.

Unfortunately I’m deaf so can’t call and chase up VW dealerships to find a salesperson willing to do this. Been to the 2 closest to me in person and they were adamant that it wasn’t worth the time. Means I’d have to drive at least 60 miles in the hope that a Motability salesperson at a VW dealership is even there.

As for the comparison with the Focus, the GTD is an improvement in my opinion. Better built, more comfortable, brilliant auto gearbox, nicer looking. Focus is a bit more fun to drive hard and throw about in corners but apart from that, GTD surpasses it.

I had a look at the GTD, I was told by my VW dealership they can’t provide vehicles that aren’t ordered as motability orders and cancelled (open slots for whichever spec of car) and that if the system doesn’t show a motability number then they can’t order it or put it through motability as such with orders placed by private customers then cancelled these can only be sold to private customers, I’m not sure if it varies by dealership franchise? But this is consistent in two separate VW franchise dealerships I have been to. Both said the same thing.

The OH wanted the GTD I wanted the R-Line.

I ordered a R-Line also having had a VW two years ago with issues the GTD has the tech on it as standard with the issues I had with my Tiguan R-Line previously and the R-Line Golf it was an optional extra (Travel with emergency assist)  For me there’s no where I could use the 200bhp to its full potential where I live anyway! But having the tech issue (car pinging every 30 seconds that was loud over the speakers and couldn’t be switched off) I was glad to see on the Golf R-line it wasn’t standard (won’t catch me paying extra for something I know has a common fault give it a google!)

Loved the DSG 2.0 Diesel on my Tiguan, tried other autos by other manufacturers and some are awful!

We all like different things though. I found the Golf comfortable and economical for my needs compared to A3 or 1 series which are similar size.

@coruro   –  I don’t think ours was a mobility order cancelled, they are correct in that you cannot place a new order but if there is one that has been built or in the system to be built then you can order it..  Well at least we were able to, the salesman we were dealing with was very knowledgeable and even talked the other salesman from the other garage through the system and what to do.  It does seem from missingsounds experience that maybe it does depend who you get, maybe we were just extremely lucky.

I have only had a rental Golf GTI many years ago, the GTD was the only thing on the scheme that floated my boat, I just like having the extra power as we do multiple journeys down to barnstaple and that north devon link road can be a nightmare so its nice to have something that can quickly overtake if needed..

@catdog1121 – Ah see I was told different on the system there are essentially 2 order books one for private and one for motability and unless there is an existing order with a motability code on they could not change the order on the order book from a private order to a motability. (obviously not your experience by the sounds of it)

I asked if this is different because they are a different dealership to another VW I went to which was a VW AUDI dealership (ive ordered from VW SKODA different franchise too)

When I looked at the A3 and test drove it said they could amend any cancelled order to make it mine and would honour AP price change should it drop, the VW SKODA garage would not.

I couldn’t be bothered to drive the hour drive to the other garage to order a Golf and tbh I had poor customer service from them when I had my Tiguan.

And tbf to VW SKODA they have kept me updated, for my Tiguan at other garage I was chasing it every 6-8 weeks for an update and my sales rep left and no one told me. VW SKODA also went above and beyond for me to test drive and place my order, I actually had a SKODA sales rep because there were no VW Motability accredited ones in that day and the big boss came down for his office, introduced himself and the sales rep. That for me shows they care.

Everywhere else when you say Motability customer, their whole demeanour changes.

I hope you enjoy your GTD Golfs are lovely cars.

@coruro What you have been told has been Motability policy for as long as I have known (not just for VW but for ALL Motability cars). The car must show on the Motability system and have a live order number for the specific model, otherwise you cannot get the car – full stop.

What @catdog1121 has been told is a first as far as I can tell, and whilst I wish him/her well and sincerely hope that they get their much wanted GTD, I remain a tad sceptical, unless they have logged on to their Motability account and can see that Motability have authorised the car for them. If they have, they are home and dry. If they haven’t, it matters not that the dealer has ordered the car, as that is an entirely different process to Motability Operations agreeing to buy the car and lease it to the customer.

As I say, I sincerely hope that it happens, as it gives hope to countless others that when a car disappears off the Motability website all may not be lost and there may still be a chance of ordering the car as, unless someone can advise me differently, this has never been possible before with any manufacturer through Motability.

That’s good news to hear. Mine is complete factory order they had no in stock or on pre order unfortunately. I went for dolphin grey with few extras,  Mine is estimated  to be built week 8, is there an app to track the progress of the order or do you have to go to dealer to ask for updates?

We have just been getting updates by way of short video emails from the sales guy at the dealer, maybe because its a bit sooner, we have not chased at all as really don’t mind when it arrives..   I like the dolphin grey but the other half wanted something different so went for the lime yellow, I got to pick the car, she got to pick the colour, it was a must that we had the winter pack as it helps with the disability we also had to pay a bit as the car was ordered with the upgraded wheels but the car seems pretty loaded anyway.  If I was buying the car for long term keep I would spec the DCC suspension but given our last car has done like 20k miles in 4yrs really didn’t think it was worth it, maybe the uprated speakers would be good but again as we don’t do that many miles its not worth it.

I think there is a refresh coming to the Golf soon with a bigger screen (Which I think looks hideous even if it might be slightly more practical) and I think slightly thinner lights but I think you would struggle to tell the difference, anyway if its build week is 8 add another 4-5 weeks for delivery so hopefully you should get it by end of March sort of time, not really too long..

Glad we ordered as now for the same price all you can get is the Style, makes the Golf very bad value for money at the moment..

That’s great news! I hope she likes her new car!. I was debating with changing my order from a golf to something else, but so far no luck in anything suitable or economical, EV isn’t an option. limited ICE diesel options and the R-Line has now been removed, so glad I didn’t!.

The golf 8.5 infotainment screen , I agree is too big for the golf, it looks ok in the new Tiguan, but I prefer the size of the screen and the sleekness of the 8!.

Looks like build weeks are similar, mine is currently build week 7, it was build week 6, pushed back a week in the space of a month. However with the 8.5 imminent I presume the Mk8 books will be closing soon if not already, given the build weeks we have are very close, when did you place your order?

@theo2017 – Awesome, still waiting on a delivery for ours, been told its in a port I think in Belgium, they had originally said end of Jan but I always thought that was going to be ambitious, In the past 15yrs I have never heard of any new car ever being delivered on time.   Last car I bought that was actually delivered on time was an 2005 Hyundai Coupe which I ordered and then picked up 2 weeks later, why because there was no options, a choice of about 4 colours and 3 engines and that was it so they literally just had them in stock rather than being built to order.

I don’t think I would get a golf now as they are not good value, the Tiguan R-line looks a better bet which I did consider but 148bhp on a vehicle of that size and weight..   Too much money is being spent on electric vehicles that nobody wants and ICE vehicles are not progressing..

I had a Tiguan R- Line 2.0 TDi 150 4motion and it was surprisingly quick, wasn’t sluggish at all. about 1-2 seconds behind the Golf 0-60.

Gone for the same engine and transmission in the Golf R-Line this time round.

Not a huge EV or Hybrid fan, most people I know have had nothing but problems with batteries and or charging or lack thereof and the lack difference in WLTP when the weather is cold and dependant on where its driven and how its driven.

I looked at the Skoda Enyaq, on their website it shows you the types of roads and weather conditions and give you an idea what the Enyaq would give you; for me Rural and in the winter would be 150 miles.  I do that mileage in 1 – 2 days. Summer it says the full 350 which would still leave me charging every 4-5 days an ICE Diesel lasts me over a week.

Coming from a golf 1.5 r line 20 plate was on lease, honestly one of the best cars I’ve owned had an a4 black edition before this one and the golf was better in almost everything! Amazing cars, currently waiting on an bmw i4 first time on the scheme for me looking forward to it.
