EV Charger question (again sorry)

I apologise if this is repetitive, but despite trying Google and searching “meter” and fuse box” on here I am still confused.

Simple question really – can a charger be connect to just the electricity meter or does it HAVE to go to the fuse box? I am seeing conflicting answers on the internet.

I ask as my fuse box is inside the property (albeit near the front) but the meter is on the outside of the house. House is five years old and has a 100 amp fuse so should be ok on that front.

Both are less than an ten meter run from where box would go and I have my own drive.

Outside would be much easier though as the house is an ICF build so going inside means drilling through a concrete wall.

I’m not sure if this would mean an extra cost and I’m not sure if they’ll fix box to wall (I think they will as its actually a more secure fix).

I can’t answer your question directly, but as soon as you order an electric car, you will be contacted by either Ohme or Easee with regards to doing a survey as to where/how/if the wall box should go up.

If as a result of this, there is some major problems with your existing system or layout, cancel the order for the electric car.

There may be more information on YouTube too?

Thanks, yep I knew that and I’ve also failed to get a definitive answer on the YouTube route as well!

I have one from the meter box, tight squeeze to fit it all in.  So it can be done, alternatively you just need another box to contain the workings next to the meter box.

It sounds very similar to my setup, with a meter and a 100 amp fuse set in box on an outside wall. The ohme installer managed to get everything set up inside the meter box without touching the inside fuse board and a very neat job he did too. I had to pay a extra £250 for additional cable length to where I parked and needed the charger.

your setup might be different and only your installer would be able to advise you.

I’m even more confused after watching a few videos.

My house is only five years old so I expect the electrics to be fine.

In the meter the main cut out fuse has indeed got 100 amp written on the blue sticker on the side of it – BUT – someone has put a white sticker on the top that says 80 amp!

I’m going to get an electrician to have a quick look but I’m seriously wondering if this is all worth the bother……

The cut out carrier (fuse holder) is likely rated at 100A with an 80A cut out fitted.

Your home at 5yrs old is borderline being wired to the the  latest 18th edition wiring regs or at least to the 17th edition cover all the latest amendmants. Either way your home will be fine where fitting a charge pint is concerned. If the cut out rating needs upgrading it will be carried out FOC by your DNO, so why waste money having an electrician to check and not all electricians are allowed to touch it.

As a sparky or over 40yrs and qualified EVCP installer you’d be surprised whats what. I also wouldn’t be going fretting on having a charger fitted to a house thats only 5 years old either.

Ok thanks.  The electrician is a registered EV charger fitter who lives locally.

He’s having a very quick look at meter FOC.

No problem, but don’t worry about as the DNO would cover it under a minor works order FOC anyway if it needs upgrading 🙂

PS soz about spelling inmy last post!

How long after ordering an EV do the companies  take to arrange survey/installation of the home charger?

                              @Paul

We ordered last Wednesday and were contacted by Ohme yesterday, so four working days.

There was quite a lengthy in-depth online questionnaire I had to complete involving taking photographs and uploading a video of the route between the electric supply and the fuse box, but I found it quite enjoyable!

I then got a confirmation email saying that the installers Plug Me In would be touch again “soon”

As the car isn’t expected until next year I’m not worried at the moment, but our Motability specialist thought it would be a month or so.

                              Hope this helps.

Incidentally, we’re already with Octopus Energy, so for us the Ohme charger makes more sense than the Easee one, as we can select the Intelligent Octopus tariff which gives 6 hours of cheap charging rather than the more usual 4.

                                  That’s quick and quite encouraging!

Of note I’m with Octopus and moved to their Tracker Tarrif a month ago and I’ve saved a third on my bill.

It’s variable but electricity has ranged from 13.2p per kw to the most expensive of 18.5p on one day. That is 24/7 on that particular day.

Gas has never been over 4p a unit.
