They are predicting £5500 for energy per year that works out to £458.33 per month or £105.77 per week.
Now they are predicting £6,000 £500 per month or £115 38 per week ?
I am am on a Octopus Go fixed tariff until March 2023 5p off peak/normal 13.72p and 25p/day and a flexible tariff for gas 7.36 and 27.22/day
At present I use 3900 kWh, approximately 1100 kWh is used to charge the PHEV, the remaining 2800 kWh domestic use.
Gas I am using just over 10,000 kWh, however I have turned down the setting on the combi boiler hopefully this may help a little

£500 a month on energy plus other bills water council tax etc. Added to that anyone with a mortgage will wipe out any money for essentials such as food or transport etc Will leave lower end earners and those solely on benifits or those with little to no saving in the shit and my heart goes out to them.
If does become the case and shite hits the fan I can see quite few handing their scheme cars back early solely to try and make ends meet.
I’m almost certain to fit a log burner and will burn the shed if I have to.
But ye its a serious matter.

Just been through my old Octopus bills for 2021
Total for January 21 12 month period electric usage 3930.7kWh, however I did not realise I used 1595.1 kWh just charging up the PHEV at 5 pence a kWh, domestic usage 2335.6kWh
The 7th March 2022 we fitted a 4.4kW solar system to date we have generated over 3100kWh unfortunately the majority going back to the grid for 4.1 p kWh, I haven’t checked my 2022 reading however I am paying at present £110 per month and are £669 in credit, hopefully when the battery bank is fitted the end of September this should help keep the bills at bay.
I have carried out a spreadsheet estimate using Octopus Agile 70p kWh import and 35p kWh outgoing plus 50p day estimate £613.01/£51.08 month and gas at 20p kWh 10,000kWh 27p day £2088.00/£174.00 month.
Estimate for electric and gas £2701 or £225 per month, hopefully this should soften the blow a bit.

August 21, 2022 at 12:57 pm #194902It seems a mokery that any energy you put back into the grid is only 4.1p. From my undestanding your not on the older fit tariff. Yes having your battery installed will help some what.
Other than battery storage is they anyway allthough I can’t see how you can prevent selling it back to the grid.
August 21, 2022 at 2:02 pm #194904When my Octopus Go ends in March next year, I will switch over to Octopus Agile it has been capped at 55p a kWh at present however this will change judging by the 12 month fixed tariffs to around 70p kWh next year, at present Octopus Agile is paying on average 30p kWh this will probably rise to around 35/40p kWh, Octopus have stated I change back to Octopus Go for the autumn then back onto Agile in the spring as long as I can provide evidence and have a PHEV/EV
I only receive 4.1p kWh because my off peak is only 5p, as Octopus has clearly stated there is nothing stop anyone force charging their batteries and feeding it back to the grid.

August 21, 2022 at 2:42 pm #194908Can’t remember but I’m sure Ive asked you before. How many panels do you have and the watts of each panel, and is your roof south or west facing.
August 21, 2022 at 3:09 pm #19491112 x 370 JA panels roof 30 degrees south 200 degrees
The highest I have seen 4.35 kW

August 21, 2022 at 8:01 pm #194927Thanks mate :-), it just gives me an idea on roof space. My house is like a dormar so doub’t i’d fit 12 on unless it split between front and rear. 500w panels maybe I need to be looking into.
August 22, 2022 at 3:28 am #194934My fixed rate ends end of January 23. I have started looking now in case I can lock in a deal at todays lower prices. I might lose five months at a higher rate, but gain 13 months at a cheaper rate by fixing sooner rather than later? If that makes sense.
Trouble with solar, it cost so much. But I am interested, was yours fitted recently @Oscarmax?

Hi fitted 7th March 2022

August 22, 2022 at 7:35 am #194941We have been using a Remoska instead of using the oven (it can virtually cook anything), it only uses 500w, over the year it has saved us a fortune.
We have also purchased some very low power fan to place near the radiator to circulate the heating in the rooms.

I/we tend to use a slow cooker for most things that would otherwise need to becooked in the oven or the zapper if cooking a bit of veg for previously cooked meat or for beans on tast.

I don’t think you will get a locked in fixed rate at the moment. Our fixed rate came to an end in May both gas and elecric with Shell, we were moved onto a variable rate and there was no option of a fixed rate but Shell did say that option will be available after all of the price rises. Out monthly payment went from £111 to £191 a month.
Let us know if you manage to find a fixed rate.

Electric 52p kWh
Gas 14p kWh
Lat year I used just over 10,000 kWh for gas so I ma looking at around £1400 (plus 28p daily standing charge 365 x0.28) 102.20 = £1502.20 per year or £125.18 per month ?

August 26, 2022 at 10:18 pm #195268We have a 24kw central heating boiler. That will cost £3.60 an hour. We will probably keep it switched off unless its really cold, save 20 minutes daily for the hot water tank. We have a well insulated house and the ability to heat for 4 hours at low rates using electricity.
Our old property was not well insulated and the heating was on, typically, for 12 hours daily. Do the math’s and deduct a bit where it switches on and off and its around £27 a day, £810 a month!
And we have another 60% increase in the pipeline in January.
A Sunday roast, cooking for 4 hours in an electric oven , typically £3.
Even saw some people in the forest today collecting wood. Illegal, but possibly going to become more common.
August 28, 2022 at 3:56 pm #195360I have a quick look through my octopus online December fuel bills, in the very cold months like December/January I have recorded high 1500 kWh monthly gas readings, when it was 3.5p a kWh it was not to bad around £52, I am on a flexible gas tariff currently around 7.5p, however this due to double in October so I and probably looking around £225 a month, in January I believe it will jump to around 20p kWh I will probably looking around £300 for the month ?
My combi boiler has always been set at Eco, however, I have now found that setting is 75 degrees C, I altered the setting to 40 degree C for water and 55 degrees for the heating. I used to set my thermostats to 22 degrees C, I intend to set the room to 20 degrees C and bedrooms to 18 degrees C. Hopefully I can reduce my winter consumption by 20/30%

Apparently, these boilers rarely run at full power, around 50%. On that basis, we will probably have the boiler running for an hour in the morning, and a couple of hours in the afternoon/evening, switching to electric at 9.30pm. GAs consumption around £5-6 a day, which I can live with!
August 30, 2022 at 9:55 am #195471Found a calculator on Money Saving Expert website. If you get you last gas and electric bill it will have an estimated usage, enter the details and it will calculate how much you will pay from October. It was very accurate with my current monthly bill, £180 a month. It estimates I’ll be paying £324 from October, but do remember we will be getting £64 a month off the bill from the government for 6 months so that should take it to £260, plus my energy saving changes which should reduce it further.

August 30, 2022 at 7:00 pm #195506not sure really how im gonna manage being on my own, but can only try. if it becomes obvious i cant then car will have to go back i guess. its not how the money is supposed to be used tho and my sons’ getting to hospital would be an issue too.
its all very worrying if i think about it so will just have to, not think about it…for now.

I think there will definitely be more for those who need it. My partners employer has just announced they are giving them a monthly bonus based on a percentage of the energy price cap, to help them with energy bills, a few employers are doing this.
