Driving an EV for nothing, can you do it?

I live in Scotland and ChargePlace Scotland have free chargers dotted throughout the country.
I have a number of them within 1 mile of my house. every day I go for walk of about two miles. I recently started to drive the car to one of the chargers, which ever one is vacant, charge it up over a few hours then walk back to pick it up when it’s fully charged.

With the other xc40 I was paying between £100 and £150 per month in fuel. To go from that to paying virtually nothing is a ?s up from me.

        That sounds awesome mate ??

what is the performance of the car like when it’s on full electric?

do you get people on mobility scooters beating you at the lights? Lol

or is it still enough oomph to drive normally?

The way electric motors work is that you get a lot of torque from low/zero RPM. They become more asthmatic the faster you go.

That means even in full electric mode and the weight of PHEVs, at the lights, they pull like trains up until like 20-25mph. After that it becomes less “urgent”, but not to the point where you become a roadblock.

In full electric you still pull away from ICE cars up until 20mph, despite having nominally less power. It’s just that you have way more power where an ICE car makes basically none. It don’t know about the XC40, but in the Golf GTE, it’s enough to get the tyres screeching.

Above 50mph or thereabouts, that’s where electric only becomes somewhat painful. I’d argue that safe overtaking in normal circumstances (in a 60mph, of course) isn’t granted there, but for that you can always call on the ICE engine to boost past someone. If the XC40 is anything like the GTE, once the petrol engine runs, the electric motor then also “boosts” when you put your foot all the way down, as in you get increased power from the electric motor (more than you’d get electric only) for 10 seconds.

I’m not 100% certain, in regards to the topic, if i could do it. We have free chargers, mainly at the shops, but i don’t want to park my PHEV at a 50kw charger for 4 hours. For half an hour if i go shopping, sure – but “blocking” a charger for 4 hours to get 40 miles, when EVs could charge over a thousand miles in the same time (not a single one, of course) feels arse. Not gonna judge anyone for it (especially with the energy prices now), but i know i’d be annoyed if we’d be driving an EV and a PHEV sits on the charger for 4 hours.

Rene I only use 7kwh chargers so don’t block anyone. My app lets me know when the car is full so I’m on it as soon as it’s ready.

As @Rene says we have them at shops when we go shopping that allow 50kw charging free, but if you wan’t fast charging you have to pay. I’m not sure on time limit your allowed to stay and most supermarkets carparks are run by private companies and we all know what they can be like.

Enjoy it while it lasts, we had loads of free chargers but they are now 50p per kWh so in colder months an ev would be more expensive than a petrol car or at least for us anyway.

For me personally I’m not so much of a lover of free chargers because you can’t use them, this isn’t having a go but we never used free chargers with our xc40 because your taking a 50kwh space to add a few miles an hour to a phev. I know that nobody is more entitled to a space than anyone else but that’s just my opinion.

I suppose the chargers and spaces should be better designed, we have two spaces per station, one is dedicated for taxis and the other has acces to all three cables. Really they should be placed where you can park both front and back so four spaces and we could use the 50 and 22 sockets

Correction it may be only 7kw for free.

If it’s a charger that only does 7kw with no option (paid or unpaid) to go faster, then yeah, go for it.

If it’s a 50kw charger that’s only 7kw if used free (but 50kw if paid), then my point (for me) still stands.

If i’m not mistaken, our local Tescos offers 22kw charging for free (50kw paid), while still not fast, it’s like 7 times more than our car can take (but nowhere near what most EVs can charge with), so i do pass on those.

It’s not like many of us who are the pip/dla or wpms claimant and the sole driver, who depentant on the car for our mobility, can walk 2 miles or even 10/20 metres to charge up a car for free. So not sure what really it has to do with this forum or what this post is trying to achieve and that is the biggest blockage to many getting an ev or phev that don’t have a driveway on the scheme.

My take on it is,take advantage of the situation whilst you can. I know I would 🙂
