Do dealers have advance notice of next quarter AP?

Have been a motability customer for nearly 20 years. Have always been told by the motability specialist at the dealership that they will not know the next quarter AP until on the day or if lucky the day before.

On certain FB pages dealers have been saying there is a definite increase of AP next quarter. Some stated £500-750 minimum increase. At the same time they are pushing us to order cars from their stockpile by end of June or have it registered by end of August.

Is there any validity in their saying of increase of AP? I think they are just saying that in order to meet their numbers of car sold by end of the month.

I do know that motability are pushing EVs by reducing their APs and increasing AP or reducing choice of ICE cars.

Dealers don’t know for sure until the actual day or, at most a day or so before. Anything that they say before that is usually pure speculation on their part. They sometimes get wind of proposed changes, as recently happened with Subaru, but often things that they are told about don’t actually end up happening!

APs, with a few exceptions, have been on an increasing trajectory for a long time. Nobody knows, but my guess is that they won’t rise significantly more in the future, as the APs currently being asked must surely be pricing a lot of potential Motability customers out of the scheme. If they go much higher more and more people will start to look elsewhere.

How longs a piece of string really,  they will keep increasing so long as people keep paying.  It strikes me we, as customers, are missing a few tricks I.e. why do people pay deposits- no requirements with motorbility. If the dealerships say we can’t order one without a deposit just tell them ok I will go elsewhere. There lack of sales will change there minds. After all we can order a vehicle from any dealership in uk, pick it up then transfer the maintenance to a local garage. Believe me they ain’t going to refuse it!

Sometimes a couple of weeks before the new quarter, manufacturers have their webpage updated with new prices, and at times they are published.

It is usually last minute though.

The cost of car manufacturing has rocketed, and so have the AP,s.

You have to be delusional if you think that inflation occurs and the prices of everything drops back down to pre-inflation prices.

Once the AP pricing goes up, it stays up, just like shop prices.

There is a motability specialist in Scotland that always posts Ford’s new pricelist a few days before the Quarter begins.

There are always threads on this forum discussing each new quarters prices. It would be much appreciated if you could post a link to these early Ford price lists, as we rarely get sight of any of the new price lists until the day before at the very earliest.

What do you base that on Paul? We are only a few days from the next quarter and there’s absolutely zero info out there from any manufacturer. We often find out about the changes before the dealers do!

I am so torn about knowing if I should order now, or wait for July……..

I have a reasonable offer for Ionic 5 Premium 77Kwh battery for £549 deposit and £500 cashback.  I tried to end my lease early (ends 27th Sept) but they wanted £250 + lose my £250 good condition bonus.

Not sure what to do now but seeing offers in other parts of the country that would allow me to have the Ultimate Tech which is the car I really want – for same as the Premium down here……

I notice there are plenty of offers from the start of April when new prices came out last – is this usual or will deals be harder to come by?

I would say in general, the best discounts were in March, leading upto the end of Q1 and more importantly the end of the financial year. Dealers who either had stock to shift or needed car orders/sales to hit their bonus targets were offering some very good deals (free televisions aside)!

I wouldn’t say the start of Q2 was remarkable in any way. The usual suspects were giving discounts and many of the offers were, as usual, running for the whole of the current quarter or whilst stock lasted.

However, there maybe less ‘clearance offers’ in the days leading uo to the end of the current quarter than we have seen of late.

As to what Q3 will bring offers wise – who knows?

If you know of a decent offer, which you are happy with, then go for it. The way vehicles fly on and off the scheme ‘mid-quarter’ nowadays means there is no certainty anymore.

Another addition to the evidence that dealers do know in advance. My local Vauxhall dealer has an astra estate in stock with the advert claiming it’ll be a grand more on Monday. It is petrol however and it seems the EVs get reduced more than the ICE cars.

Obviously could just be a “get a sale” line but who knows

                                  Helpful – thank you!

I’m kinda luck as I have car ordered and they will honour the deal I have even after the 1st.

Plus the car I was gonna have will be sold so they have to start a new order anyway. My fingers are crossed.

The AP is not a deposit, it is an advanced payment to off set the cost of the car against your monthly payment made by motorbility.

It’s due on collection of the car after your happy with the car and agree to commence the lease agreement.

Any dealership telling you you have to pay it on ordering is talking out there hat!

Please read the terms of the lease.

I agree however, with more and more dealers demanding the AP is paid by bank transfer prior to collection dayand with a maximum of £1000 paid by debit card, which is more often limited to £500, the idea of checking the car over and paying on the day of collection, is rapidly starting to go out the window!

Vertu has the policy to pay 4 days before collection like I did at my local Vertu Toyota dealer so you cannot go to any Vertu dealer in the U.K. if you walk away

Understood. We are now less than 24 hours from the quarter change and we have nothing yet. I spoke to quite a few dealers from a number of different brands at the Motability Big Event in Exeter on Friday and none of them had any idea about what changes we would see on Monday.

Unless things have changed recently Dealers would have the new price lists the week before. I used to work next to the local Ford dealership and our first five Motability cars were Fords and the salesman I used to deal with would always show me the new price list days before. I also had a close friend who was a salesman at the local Audi dealership until a couple of years ago and he told me they had the new prices in the week before.

Just spoke to a friend whose relative is a motability specialist. They sometimes get the list before the start of the quarter, not always.

For my first motability car I went to a dealer that covered two makes. I wanted a model A but he told me that due to model B being facelifted soon the AP has dropped a lot. I went for the model B. When the facelift version came out the AP for the similar trim went up by £2k. That was back in 2007. When my lease was up I was interested in model C from the same dealership, it met my needs but had a high AP. I went back to the dealership on the last day of the quarter as recommended by the motability specialist. I asked him if the AP price was going up tomorrow when the new quarter starts. He told me he can’t say. Asked if I liked coffee, I said yes. Before he left he placed a paper on his desk and turned it so I can read it. It was the AP for the new quarter and the AP has gone up by a large amount. I ordered my car there and then lol. He has always been supportive but told me he has to be careful otherwise he might lose his position.

If we are lucky we might see new AP prices on manufacturer website tonight but by then it’s too late to order if AP has gone up.

I have car ordered and they will keep my deal even if it goes up – we have to reorder as I couldn’t take the car immediately as lease runs out Sept.

I have a hunch that Motability may have instructed manufacturers to tighten up on the release of new quarters lists, probably due to the way that customers understandably ‘play’ the system to take advantage of any price drops or beat price rises. Not that long ago, we used to have sight of at least half a dozen manufacturers price lists before the quarter change day – sometimes more. Recently we’ve struggled to get anything, although I can’t help but wonder that the problem last quarter and this quarter (where we’ve seen virtually nothing in advance) could be partly down to the days immediately prior to a quarter change being a weekend when nobody updates websites.

I have very good relationships with a couple of dealers and they tell me that they now get nothing before we do, and I’ve no reason to doubt them. I was also at the Motability Big Event on Friday and spoke to a lot of staff from different dealerships. They were frustrated that the show was on just a couple of days before the next quarter as they were quoting prices that would expire on Monday. Those that I asked if they had any info on Q3 (not just on prices, but cars that may be coming on or off the scheme) all claimed to have no info whatsoever and seemed quite frustrated about that.
