Dash Cams – Motability Rules

I’m thinking of getting a dash cam fitted but a bit concerned about Motability’s non hard wired installation rules. Can I ask anyone who has a camera fitted, is it still possible to get one fitted and to hide the wiring in any way?

They mean hard wired through car fusebox…just feed wire from dashcam around interior, along windscreen, down pillar under dash ,dependant on best route of car layout.

          Hi

I have 2 dash cams, 1 covering the front and 1 covering the rear. Both are fitted via suction mounts and powered from 12v sockets.

The wiring is tucked under the trim around each window.

I have mine into 12v socket on current car then tucked behind glove box and with an extension lead. It is just tucked into edge of trim up door across where this is a jin in molding and around window pushed in with a plastic spatula so only bit of cable visible is where it comes to camera itself. Cable can be pulled out with no tools required.

is that photo showing your cameras on the right hand side of the mirror, if yes that is illegal. As you can see it and watch it, if involved in an accident they will immediately say you were distracted by the dash cam. It must be fitted were you the driver can not see it.

I believe the above question was meant for Honey Monster.

I have no personal experience of dash cams and I’m not saying this to be negative as I can see why people want them, but it’s worth being aware that they can be used against you in the event of an accident, well as in support.

In dull moments when there’s not much else on TV, I watch some of the traffic police programmes and there have been two or three examples I have seen in the past few weeks alone where drivers have been incriminated and ended up being charged and fined etc as a result of their own dash cam footage, which the Police confiscated following accidents. In the cases that I saw, the drivers would not have been charged and fined had they not had a dash cam, as the initial police assessment didn’t indicate that they had been at fault. I only mention this as it’s not something that I would have considered myself.

Good point, thanks for the reminder.

IN 2022 you would think dashcams would be ‘in built’ on every vehicle produced.

The new MG has a dedicated built in usb port at the top of the windscreen as standard

In reply to above comment the dash cams view window can be switched off when driving if you wish and find it distracting

Who wants to see a screen showing you the exact thing that you are already looking at

IMO the modern touch screens in cars are more distracting

What MG does that come on? I’m expecting an MG HS Exclusive soon and I wasn’t aware of this. Nice touch if true!

Don’t worry about it. I have a friend who has a dash cam wired in and I have a tow bar with electrics wired in. Just ask motability – they may add it to the insurance so it gets replaced should your car get written off. Ha!

I have the exact same setup as HoneyMonster. Nextbase 522gw with the added rear camera module, tucked behind the trim into 12V.

@X depends what you want to do with it. If it is just to record events Nextbase 322gw is fine. If you want something for your tiktok account the Nextbase 522gw as @Rene suggest.

Dash cam has saved me twice lol n my life from crash for cash scams. Because no insurance is going to side with you on you u hitting someone up the rear. That is until they see the footage of them over taking you at speed and ltrally pulling in a meter in front of you and slammed my on the brakes
