Confusion over dash cam

      Hi

I’m wanting a dashcam when my new car arrives I know they can’t be hardwired but is plugging into the cars OBD2 port allowed.  I’m getting a Hyundai Kona EV would a dashcam this way drain the battery and would motability let it be done, I’ve seen some posts on here where people have it but because it’s not just plug into 12v socket I’m confused over if it’s allowed or not.

Im not very tech savvy which is probably why I’m confused, can someone explain it.  Ideally I want a front & rear dashcam that doesn’t have wires everywhere and records when parked and will be allowed by motability.

      Thanks in advance

Thank you everyone for your advice, I’m going to go with one of the nextbase cams with plug in rear attachment that way I don’t have cable running all through the car only at front, and only have it plugged in when car is running 🙂

I have had a nextbase connected to my obd port on my ex30 for 6 months now, with no issues. I need the parking mode active as had a car crash into mein when it was parked and that was off the scheme.

So need the security just plugging in the 12v doesn’t give. I remember on the golf I had  back in 2017 vw gave me a odb doggle. That you paired your phone to. I forget now exactly what it did but it was permanently transmitting and didn’t cause any issues. The 622gw I have now only has a tiny internal battery and it replaced a 22x. I have got it as it has the rear camera mounted to the actual dash cam. so stops the need for running the wiring for the rear camera. also the ex30 only has 12v in the boot and if you have stuff in the boot, well its going to get bashed a lot

So really the obd port was the only viable option. plus it has the low voltage cut off.
