i have similar issues with back and knees, i found the mokka, kamiq and 2008 just that bit low for me. the best i found in your price range were the nissans juke and quashqai. ive gone for the juke hyybrid nconnecta on wpms its £631 but on pip/dla its 499. the quahqai under £500 is the base model so may not have the spec you would like.

Peugeot probably the best looking with the coolest interior but the Skoda Kamiq could be worth a look. I’d say just look at as many as you can. Loads of times I’ve looked at a car and crossed it off the list as soon as I sat in it

Same problems here.  I would go SUV, I had a SEAT Terraco (Sane as Skoda Kodiaq and VW Tiguan Allspace) which was so easy to get in and out of – wide doors all round and electric boot.  However, I have a Hyundai Tucson on order which is much the same.

For me I would look at vehicles which make things more comfortable (e,g heated seats, reversing camera as well as those above) plus things that safer like collision assist, lane control, blind spot, self parking.

It is surprising when you have driven a vehicle with those features going back to one without is quite a change.

There aren’t many SUV available for £0-£500, so your choices aren’t that great. I’m of course talking about actual SUVs, not slightly raised hatchbacks (Mokka etc).

A new Sportage could be had for £499, Bridgend has a dealership (i should know, i’ve been there to take a Sportage for a test drive lol).

It’d certainly help if you give some pointers about needs. Big car? Small car? Automatic mandatory, all those things matter a lot when you’re looking at the low end of cars.

A good, reasonably safe bet would be the Citroen C3 Aircross (£395, best “small SUV” 2021).

Prior: SEAT Ateca Xcellence Lux 1.5 TSI DSG MY19, VW Golf GTE PHEV DSG MY23
                Current: Hyundai Ioniq 6 Ultimate
                Next: we'll see what's available in 2028.

My previous Skoda Superb started to jar at my lower back and knees. I was hoping the Kodiaq was on the scheme in a decent trim, but after 2 yrs of extending the Superb it never showed. I hastily ordered the Tuscon Ultimate  29th Dec 21 to prevent any price increases. My knee hasn’t forgive me for it though, its a manual, now looking for early terminaion.

I’m surprised VW group haven’t hybridised there mid to large SUV’s. So have decided to look else where, I was hoping the X Trail had joined the schem in Tena or higher in Q1 as the Qashqui did.

Sinclair Skoda Gorseinon is 30mins away, or is that a bit far. The Kona is no longer on the scheme (new model coming this year) and may not grace the scheme. Check the lead times of Vauxhalls as they can take an age to come, unless you can get one frm stock. The 2008 or as @Rene says the C3 is worth a look.

Hi all, can someone on the forum explain why the advance payment for say the Nissan Juke with (Wpms) is higher than advance payment with (Pip) I always thought the ap would be lower as the weekly rate is higher or has something changed??? Thanks.

Well, it is a bank holiday. And they’ve been a thing for quite some time.

I would have a look at something like an electric Mokka if I were you. Easy to live with, good range and super clean for the environment. Plenty of charge points when you are out and about, you can’t go wrong with a BEV.

hi khalid, its because theyve fixed the weekly payment at £72. for wpms so when the allowance goes up in april 10%ish you get to keep the £7 odd or £28 a month whereas the pipetc is total allowance so they pay the extra to catch up.

if you see what i mean? prob as clear as mud.

took me a while to get it.

I guess as you get a new car payment of £750, although it’s after you pickup the car It would make a car upto £750 nil ap or if upto £1250 – £500 but you’d have to pay it upfront. So that maybe open up a few more cars to look at. but for a max of £500 a few car others have not mentioned are the SUZUKI VITARA ESTATE 1.5 HYBRID SZ-T 5DR AGS or SUZUKI S-CROSS HATCHBACK 1.5 HYBRID MOTION 5DR AGS both are £499 and the RENAULT CAPTUR HATCHBACK 1.6 E-TECH FULL HYBRID 145 EVOLUTION 5DR AUTO £395 both my brothers have young families and have captur’s and seem to have no issues fitting all the stuff they need in them.

the seem to have changed the way they cost the wpms lease whereas the used to reduce the ap to rebalance the difference in allowance about £1100. they are now utilising the weekly rental, there are quite a few of the cars that have recently come back that are set at £72 a week for wpms rather than having a reduced ap.

good in that any cost of living increases during the lease you get to keep. £7 x 52 = £364 x 3 =£1092. assuming 10% increase in april then add on an inc in 24 and 25.

i am sure bigdave will be along to correct me lol.

I  believe you are on the right track there Mitch.

As to why it has occurred, I think a few factors have come into play (although bear in mind it is rather late at night where I am currently so I maybe a bit wide of the mark):

                                      1.     Firstly, there has been no official announcement (yet) from the Minister for Service Personnel & Veterans regarding the annual increase to War Pensions (incl WPMS)  from April 2023 (unlike the DWP who were quick off the mark with their benefit’s increase announcement. AFIP is also covered by separate ongoing legislation).

Hence although we all expect  War Pensions, including WPMS to rise by 10.1%, until a Ministerial Statement  is made and/or the relevant Statutory Instrument amendment to the Service Pensions Order is tabled, the increase is not set in stone yet. There will be severe ructions if it isn’t 10.1% though!

                                      2.     Secondly the fact that the increase is expected to be 10.1% – the largest increase by far for many years has had a disproportional effect, not noticed in previous years around this time of year.

                                      3.     Thirdly, Motability already have fully priced-in the April 2023 increase to the AP’s for all other benefits/allowances, but because of 1. above, cannot fully commit with WPMS – although from a brief look they have in some cases where vehicles are already total allowance – the differential between WPMS AP’s and other benefit’s AP’s has risen to £1285. However, in some cases they have held the max weekly price at £72 fixed and increased the AP accordingly as you have pointed out.

By holding the max weekly price on many vehicles at £72 fixed, it actually works in the WPMS recipient’s favour as, particularly if inflation remains high over the forthcoming years, they will receive a greater benefit from not having a total allowance increase during the lease.

Obviously this means WPMS recipients are paying greater AP’s – if these are unaffordable it is worth approaching one of the ex-service charities/associations for help (less prescriptive than Motability grants).

I will do a bit more digging when I get back to the UK next week.

                                        thanks @Bigdave.

for those on wpms the veterans agency do a grant up to £660 for those requiring an automatic because of their disability. its an easy form to complete doesnt usually take long for a decision and once granted it is administered via motability so is issued pretty promptly when you pick up the car.
