Earlier this year we decide to go upgrade to the full optic fibre we went for the full fastest speed package, our property is 5 years old, since the upgrade we get reports our internet is unstable, it keep dropping out, plus it is incredibly slow and unreliable.
We have checked with our neighbours it is not just us they are all having the same problems.
Unfortunately I have suffered a brain injury and occasionally I get confused and often say the wrong thing.

Do you have Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) or Fibre To The Premises (FTTP)
Are you using WiFi or Ethernet to your device – have you done a speed test with your devise plugged in?
Have you tried resting your router by turning off for 5 minutes and back on.
If you have a BT phoneline you can carry out a quite line test by dialing 17070 press option 2 nd check their is no interference on the line like cracking or hissing.
If your router is connected to a slave socket, try connecting it to the master socket, keeping it away from any electrical equipment and with good line f sight.
You can also try connecting to a different Wifi channel, one thats ess busy. Depending on the router this can be done by turning the roughter on and off. If your router has 5ghz WiFi use that rather then 2.4ghz.
You could try a factory reset on your router by pressing the recessed button on back and holding until lights flash. then when hub restarts check and see if speed is o.k, if not phone customer services and report faulty hub and ask for replacement.
You could access your super hub by typing 192.168.1.254 in a browser and go into logs, to check wether there is any dropouts logged.
I don’t know if @joss can add to my list 🙂

August 22, 2023 at 10:37 am #230680I forgot to add that if your neighbours are having the same issues it could be a faulty batch of routers, though most likely a (duct) line or cabinet fault. If you all complained as a group the less chance you will get fobbed off!
August 22, 2023 at 11:22 am #230685I think you have pretty much covered it all there @Kezo. But if @Oscarmax could either confirm if he is on FTTC (Fiber to the cabinate) or FTTP ( Fibre to the premises) would help us.
However. BT is not the best ISP for anything, Period. Oscarmax where do you live? This would help me suggest better FTTP isps.

The speed to the hub is excellent, the speed from the hub is slow and unreliable, BT only guarantee the speed to the hub, after that you are on your own.

Do you find it slow in every room?
What speed are you getting after the hub vis an ethernet cable and wireless – you will need to do a speedtest for this. Any sppedtest supplier will do. Restart the router and carry out another test. Is their any difference?
If you have the smart hub 2 router, it is widely known to have a glitch that disrupts the connection between certain Wi-Fi enabled devices. I did however believe this was fixed sometime ago!

August 22, 2023 at 5:57 pm #230748@Oscarmike what speed to you have to the BT hub? and then from your router? Is it a BT router? utter garbage they are. I suspect that could be the focal point of your problems.
What cable do you use from BT hub to your router?
Is your router on here?
if so, which one?

It is the Huawei 1 port red ends ethernet cable.

I think that link is a little outdated as openreach are no longer using the Huawei ONT modem. As believe openreach are urrently using ECI, Nokia and trialing a Nokia (4 port) and Adtran ONT’s. The router would be the BT Smart Hub 2 FTTP, and a close guess the ONT will be the Nokia Ont G-010G-Q.
@Oscarmax can you pop a picture up of BT’s equipment and model of the HubAugust 23, 2023 at 8:47 am #230813@Oscarmax How long is your contract with BT? Still need to know your location. Town will suffice. Just so I can look at alternative, quality FTTP ISP’s in your area. Do you know what telephone exchange you are connect to? if so let me know.

Hi Joss we are near Stafford, we extended our existing contract in January for 2 years when signing up for Optic Fibre, so I stuck with them for another 16 months. As regards telephone exchange I have no idea, it was poor and kept dropping out before optic fibre, optic fibre is less stable, I have given up with BT, when the contract ends I will have to look at an alternative.

I have been onto BT site they have performed 15 minute line test, followed by a text, it seems to improved lets see if it stays that way.

Hi Joss,
The text basically stated if it has improved no need to reply, if it has not improved reply and they will phone back.
All I can say it is normal nothing special, we changed the LG television last month because the signal kept dropping out, we now have a new posh LG that has still dropped out.
When I went BT online site it showed 4 different problem options, I ticked slow and signal dropping out.

August 23, 2023 at 12:08 pm #230842@Oscarmax I don’t use wireless, save for Mrs Joss’s laptop plus alarm and mobile phones Xbox.
My Tv /Sky is wired via Cat 5 cable. Cable is king in my eyes. Faster, superior connection.
The trouble with BT is you can’t talk to Tech support. If you do it’s india and that’s like talking to a brick wall as they wont/can’t deviate from the script.

I have wireless to my iPhone in our Suzuki Across that useless as well, I use a lead.

August 23, 2023 at 12:23 pm #230844A line test will just test for unwanted noise on the line and report if there’s problem requiring either an engineer visit or exchange fault node fault. It has little to do with wifi especially as you said your line speed to the house was ok.
Try these
On your Acer laptop click on the wifi tab and check you are not connected to your BT Hub and not BT wifi which are hotspots. Disconnecting and reconnecting to your internet connection often works wonders.
Smart setup on your bt hub 2 can cause issues – try turning it off if you havent already.
On your hub try turning wireless mode to 1,2 or 3 if it defaulted to auto. Really you should be using a wifi analyser on your phone to acertain whats best mode but worth a try!
When I was with Sky which is basicaly Openreach your BT uses, I had no end of problems with the internet with DCHP always dropping out, numerous wifi issues including the Sky Q box seemingly taking a;; wifi signal even though it was connected by erthernet and wifi turned off. In the end I switched the Sky router to modem mode and used my own router which cured the problem. As soon as my contract was up I went straight back to Virgin broadband and haven’t had one drop out.
Is yyour landline BT voip – connected to the router rather than phone socket?

If you have a spare cat5 cable take your laptop into the bedroom and do a speed test. Let us know the results .

GeeSorry to learn of your Fibre woes @oscarmax.
I hope that you are able to resolve those issues soon.
My BT home essentials is not the quickest broadband out there but its quick enough for everyday browsing and even downloading movies and/or larger files etc.
EXAMPLE:
A 3gb 1080p movie download will take approximately 15 mins to fully download late at night but perhaps 20+ mins early evening.
Tested moments ago (6.03pm)my BT essentials returned 34.5 Mbps download & 7.20 Mbps upload speeds.
Plus i get an inclusive landline handset with 700 mins free calls per month.
Total Monthly Cost:
A very reasonable £15 per month.
Footnote:
In the 4 months that i’ve had BT essentials broadband & phone i haven’t made a single landline call.
