Last weekend i test drove both cars and i wanted to let members know my thoughts.Firstly the Audi A4 which is petrol Auto only on the scheme with a large ap of £3750. The dealer did offer me a test drive and he pointed out that only the petrol 150 is available on the scheme. So i was’nt pleased that come the day of the test drive he sat me in the car and said that it was a diesel that i would be driving and i was an older model ! The drive was hard and not much give even in comfort mode, not sure why it is on the scheme and not the Audi Q3.  The next day i drive the X1, this time it was the right engine and a brand new car.The reason for the test drive was to see if 150hp is enough for driving on motorways and A roads, i believe it is, it’s a great car with a smooth engine and has all the extras i need.Members have mentioned the seats, but they were ok for me, not as good as Volvo’s but what are! I can not consider the Volvoxc40 due to the horrible mpg figures and the only Auto diesel  is a wopping £3600.

I run a X1 1.8 diesel and for sure 150 BHP is fine. long motorway trip to France last year well loaded up it had plenty of power.

not that long ago 150 bhp was a lot!!!

I can’t see much value in the A4. The AP would need to be at least £1500 less for me to even consider it.

I like the X1. I think it looks smart and if I was getting one I’d go for the 18d too. I think 150bhp will be absolutely fine. 50-70mph bursts will be no problem at all.

Its the BMW for me, great car, very different cars to compare though and both good cars.

It is a pity about the XC40 the nonsense about paying extra for metallic paint has ruined the start to my new year.

If 150 BHP  is enough…. enough for what?

What are you towing, how much weight are you carrying around, how fast are you wanting to go that 150 BHP might not be enough?

There is no way I’d give Motability nearly £4K for a car, although it’s clearly the most prestige car in my humble opinion — although the mileage on my XC40 is awful(25.6 now!) I literally only drive son to school and a day out every other week, it’s sat on my driveway.

My back, spine and hips are ruined so I needed a large door and big entry to slide in, this was perfect. Having seen the now infamous metallic paint extra I’m quite lucky, with my £500 discount and £600 good condition I only paid £900 in real money. The mileage isn’t a real issue for me. £50 lasts me roughly a month. Got it in first week December and only empty last week.

How stupid are Audi for giving you an older model to test drive. I like the A4 it’s a quality car but not practical for me.
At that AP though i doubt they sell many on the scheme.

The A4 is lovely but with the AP very few will be ordered through the scheme. I find it bizarre with the OTR price of over £37k – how they dint have the Q3 back on the scheme tbh

i have a Skoda karoq and considered the X1 when I was doing my research & zhortlist before i made a final decision but the local bmw dealer has always put me off & I felt looked down on Motability customers imho

I had considered going to the bmw dealership in west London but they’d stopped their AP discount at the time but glad to see they’ve introduced it again

I’m in the same position to Crippledad. My condition means my joints (spine included) are not formed properly and one joint not at all. I only just scrape 5’ 3” on my good leg and my other is 3 1/2” shorter.

I opted for an X1 18d SDrive in SE trim and with options, some needed, some wanted, I paid £5,300! It’s a lot of money but I’m extremely happy with it. It has std seats but added electric and I find entry/exit very good and the engine has plenty of low down punch, which to be honest is what you need. It does lose some of its torque at around 60mph but then I’ve been used to V6’s prior to this for many years. My only criticism about the SDrive is that if overtaking and accelerating quite hard, the front end/steering goes light. I don’t like this. This is the first fwd car I’ve had for many years and long gone are my days of brisk driving (honest?) and I am more than happy with the torquey diesel. It feels more powerful than my wife’s 1.6 petrol GLA but in fact they are very similar for performance, just not economy. I get 50+ mpg while I struggle to get over 35mpg in that.

? I will be remembered for nothing but had great fun doing it ?

The A4 is very expensive for what it is.

Fair enough it’s the black edition but for almost £4k AP I would have expected the 190bhp diesel.

All the road tests I have read of it say to avoid the 2.0 150bhp engine.

I would imagine it’s on the scheme due to Audi not being able to shift them.

Thanks Donkey Oatie for the reassuring words.I do 10 to 15 thousand miles per year so good to know its a great car for motorways.

Spot on Dante, after contacting BMW in Harroagte i asked for a test drive.I was contacted within a day by email and as soon as i replied to the email that i was a motorbility customer i never heard from them again! My advice now is not to mention that you are a motorbility customer when you request the test drive, if you can depending on your disability.

My current car is a Volvo xc60 D4 Lux auto , i will be weeping in the street when i give it back!

All I can say about service is that I have had excellent service from Peter Vardy in Edinburgh. When I asked about the X1 initially I was put on to their Motobility specialist who couldn’t have been more helpful. Perhaps customers get lost when being transferred to a motobility salesman??

I have decided to extend the lease to 5 years (currently expiring in March) as I am very happy with the X1 and cant see what would suit me better, the facelift X1 isn’t different enough to make a change worth while. but who knows what the next couple of years will bring?

BMW have made the sliding rear bench on the X1 an option since the facelift, it is an option worth having if you use the rear seat and are on the taller side, when you get the fixed bench it is fixed somewhere in the middle of the travel of the sliding bench. It is a good practical car.

I spotted this too greycar. Mine is a 2017 X1 and my son is 6’2”. With the rear seats back he’s stated that it’s very comfortable. And he also says the head room is fine. Such a shame that they’ve started charging for the sliding rear seats.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Just finished 3 years with a x1 25d and it was excellent. Tried others incase there was better out there but ended up getting another x1 – LCI 20i xline. Comes with heated seats, cruise control, self parking, led headlights, all standard no up charge. For the 2k ap price you can’t go wrong. This one has 190bhp engine and it’s plenty. So much smoother and quit compared to the 25d. Was worried this would feel slower but no need.</p>

At the moment, I’m pretty much with you Andy. I change in September and if the AP’s don’t change to much (knowing my luck though…..!) then another X1 is too strong a contender for me as well. The only thing at the moment that will make me move is a Tiguan but I’ve not tried the seats yet. ?
