I’m due to change my car in December and want to look at alternatives to my current Hyundai iX20, preferably slightly smaller.  Critical is that has to be automatic, and I have to easily be able to get my wheelchair in the boot without taking the wheels off – chair dimensions are width 65cm, height 65cm and length 83cm.  I am happy to have one or both of the back seats folded down to achieve this.  Totally frustrating though that I can’t seem to find any actual boot (or boot opening size) dimensions on any of the cars I am looking at, which means that once again I am going to have to go looking at a dozen or more cars to even make a shortlist for test driving – and during Covid that is a nightmare.   Can anyone make recommendations to help me shortlist?  I also want to try and keep within the allowance and not pay any upfront deposit if I can.

        Hi

RiDC website has the dimensions of most cars, I find it very helpful for this reason.

Does it have to be smaller as an estate car would be ideal. I’m a wheelchair user and have had automatic estate cars for about the last 20 years. Much easier for putting the chair in the boot. This quarter though is about the 1st time I’ve noticed there are no auto estates available with nil advance payment. Hopefully next month when the prices change there maybe 1 available but It’s not looking good.

I think you will find that really small cars will take your wheelchair, take it along to a garage or two to give it a try.

Our tiny Picanto automatic takes a folded wheelchair ( Karma Ergolite 2 leased for £100 through Motability) without removing “foot plates” or wheels vertically with a bungee strap around rear headrest to stop it wobbling around. Rear seats unaffected. Currently no Picanto or i10 autos on scheme, maybe when you order. Suzuki Ignis may also suit If auto is on scheme.

These cars don’t even take all your weekly PIP

If I remember correctly the Helium doesn’t fold down at all, it’s probably going to be best to trip around and take the chair with you and try in the boots.

My wife has a Fiat 500 and I can put my quickie helium in through the boot with the back seats down without taking the wheels off and just the back folded down.

My wifes wheelchair goes in the boot of our MINI Countryman standing up without removing anything, used to lie down in the golf estate I had, but find it easier to lift in vertically, and like @smallcar says just use a bungie cord to secure if needed.

The MINI Clubman is a small estate which would also do a great job with the double rear doors.
