It seens diesel is the bad boy these days and with Motability’s focus on an Electric Motability scheme, I guess petrol cars will become fewer and fewer!
March 25, 2024 at 6:32 pm #269827Diesel is peak wrong think I’m afraid. It’s a brave new world.

The choice of petrol SUVs on Motability is getting just as bad I’m afraid. They want us all to go EV or PHEV, whether we want to or not! Private buyers are still going for petrols and diesels over EVs, by a considerable margin, so manufacturers are pushing EVs through lease operators such as Motability.
I’d like another petrol SUV as we’ve been delighted with ours (a 2.0i petrol BMW X1 which returns better MPG that our previous 2.0 diesel Tiguan) but suspect that we will have to go down the PHEV route, or even EV, if we wish to stay with Motability.

True but I have at least 10 petrol stations within a 2 mile radius and one five minute visit to any of them gives my a definite range of 400 miles that I can use down to the last mile knowing my nearest filling station will be working and another five minutes and another 400 miles range is in the tank.

I do!
Mind, living on our farm with our own petrol, DERV and rebateable diesel tanks helps!
I simply pay the farm account for my DERV diesel, plus have some in bunkerage along with the farm reserve.
March 27, 2024 at 5:21 am #269968I do!
You got me! Schweine. I mean, do you farm pigs?!!

No, we don’t farm pigs/hogs.
We have upland sheep, beef cattle, silage and commercial forestry on our home/family farm.
Then arable, beef and dairy spread across our other farms.
We lease out another mixed farm in a tie up with a research institute, veterinary college and an agricultural college and they farm some hogs but not on a commercial basis.

What I am saying is that for a lot of people it’s not cost effective to pay for public charging or the time involved to charge. If you have an EV you really need to be able to home charge. Some people cannot do that and therefore, in my case, it’s not viable.
Imagine this scenario… aside from the fact that I would have to pay over the odds at a public charging station, I go the 150 mile round trip to the caravan for the weekend excluding running around down there so call that 200 miles. I drive back, Wife and kids (one of which is severely Autistic) on board.. I drop the “Oh BTW I need to charge the car for an hour ish”. little sweetheart comment. That’s not going down well for a start and will result in some sort of meltdown from my boy. That’s even if the few chargers in the valleys are working… Or I could get up really early and charge before I do the daily 33 miles to work so 330 miles a week. I would have to charge twice a week assuming that I get the stated mpg which doesn’t happen, especially in winter. And then there is the gamble of the chargers are not being occupied or out of service. How is that coping? And also most full ev’s are smaller and not for a family of 5 and their assorted gubbins… Hence we have the Tucson..
The alternative is that I remain on a ICE/Hybrid and I spend 5 minutes putting fuel in and be done with it…. This is scenario that will play out most weeks without the occasional trips to Bedford and Reading to see family and general running around that we need to do.
In my case a full EV is just not suitable so if Motability go down this route and pull ICE and Hybrid’s then it’s no longer suitable..
March 27, 2024 at 9:32 am #269982Your asking where this delightful place is that has 10 petrol stations within 2 miles . Where I’m from I have 5 within about 1000 yards so there is probably 10 within 2 miles it’s Coatbridge and is not so delightful.
March 27, 2024 at 9:53 am #269986@BigDave – Sounds like hard but rewarding work. I support the local farm shop, really enjoy Belty beef.
@Alfanutter – Meet Andrew Ditton. The change is coming, like it or not.- It is still cheaper to public charge than paying for diesel, on average
- You don’t stop to charge, you stop for lunch/comfort break and charge at the same time
- Wales does have rapid charge points but admittedly could use more (I have a trip planned)
- Campsites will have EV charge points soon. Certainly some of the club ones already do
- No car gets the same MPG in winter
- Ask work to install EV chargers – might be of use for you
- There are over 1,000,000 full EV cars on our roads alone
- The Skoda Enyaq, VW ID4, Toyota Bz4x and more might suit you?
- I have never had a problem with public charging and availability. Over 32,000 charge locations now.
Don’t confuse anti-EV rhetoric with reality and be prepared to change your mindset. Do this and you may find it easier than you imagine, it is only getting better.
I will admit, if you are towing, it is problematic at a lot of public chargers. Although I know FastNed have a towing lane for charging whilst hooked up so I hope others will also have them or introduce them. Would I get an EV without home charging? I think I would.
Meanwhile, enjoy the Tucson!
Resistance is futile!

Who the hell is Andrew Ditton?
Yes the EV6 is one of the better EV’s for towing I guess @1600kg but, many EV’s fall short in this regard however, your still governed depending on the size or weight of a caravan you can tow and what M/kWh did he get towing?
There are 3 petrol stations withing a miles of me Diesel 149.9 Petrol 141.9 litre
There aren’t many chargers near me other tha Tesco, there are a few more around 8-10 miles away
Most EV’s Ive looked at average 3.5 milesper kWh
50kW chargers are 49p kWh
100-150kW 89p kWh
I haven’t got my thinking cap on but, as a guess 50kWh will cost around the same price as running a petrol or diesel, 100-150kW chargers will be twice the price.
I haven’t mention 7kW chargers out and about as, I value my time ? However I’m lucky to have a drive and beable to charge overnight at home, so have started to look lightly at BEV’s as an option for my next scheme car and keep my private car as a backup.
If I didn’t have the facility to charge at home, I wouldn’t entertain one sorry.
100-150
March 27, 2024 at 2:19 pm #270030It’s a shame that onto went bust, it was a handy mechanism for anyone deciding whether to take the plunge to experience EV.
Wonder if the infrastructure is genuinely actually better now than it was for me back then, 3 years ago. I mean it’s definitely more expensive to charge on the go ?
If I didn’t have the facility to charge at home, I wouldn’t entertain one
Yup ??

Thats my point, soon, you will not have the option. We have already seen the number of auto ICE cars diminish and they will drop off the list.
What I am saying, it is do-able without charging at home, what I am not saying is, it is desirable.
If you can charge at home, it’s a no brainer. If you can charge at work, well worth a look. Only public charging, catch a bus! Nope, I would public charge still. ?

March 27, 2024 at 3:08 pm #270043had a tesla and was a headache especially using public chargers. The wait time was a headache plus was like £50 to get a 220mile range out of which it would be 150-170miles max
Cars charging too slow on public chargers is another headache when you pull up somewhere and there are 5 cars waiting for 3 charging points… even worse at the Services (the time I went there at least)
