I’ve been put on a Atorovastatin, I hate taking it as it keeps me awake. But I’ve noticed it lowers my blood pressure which is crazy high. Anyone else noticed this, anyone else have side effects from statins?

The Doc put me on those Atorvastatin tablets around six months ago. To quote him ‘as a precaution’!

All I got from them was phantom limb pain from my amputated left leg!

So, ‘as a precaution’ against this I stopped taking them.

The practice nurse checked my cholesterol and BP last month and said both were normal.

          This is interesting.

I pay scant regards to the medication I take but Atorvastatin is one of them.

I don’t now about lowering my BP.

BUT I do wake up at 3am and I can also have bouts of phantom pain. If I remember I will ask the GP about it, thanks both for the heads up.

On it as well and also waking up at 3am or earlier (usually to pee as well though!) but for the last couple of months I’ve been waking up around 5am and unable to get back to sleep.

I’m on meds for Atrial Fibrilation, blood thinners, ACE inhibitor, anti-coagulant, diabetes and the usual pain killers, Tramadol, Codeine, Oramorph etc. etc., I wasn’t keen on going on statins but my GP said if I were his dad with my conditions he’d make me take them!

Please excuse spelling/typos. Apart from being a clot it turns out I had one on my cerebellum that's now causing various problems!

I think the insomnia is a major side effect of statins. I struggle with sleep as it is abd these make it worse. Oh, 1 more side effect, I’ve read the leaflet and this is confirmed, they cause terrible flatulence. 🚶‍♂️💨

I’m on Atorvastatin, and I can agree with the flatulence but I have no problems with sleep. I must be one of the lucky ones.

Slight deviation, but I spoke with my GP about this statin (Atorovastatin) and sleep.

For me, it was okay to stop taking it for a month and see if my sleep improves, I got the feeling he doesn’t think it will. Lets see.

Well it’s been a while and here are my observations of giving up the statin and also, diet cola in the afternoon/evenings (caffeine).

I think I may have had more good nights than bad, but I haven’t noticed anything particularly different. I was up at 2am today for example, yet yesterday, I slept for over 10 hours.

I will be returning to taking the statin next month. I will continue to avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evenings. If my sleep gets worse, I’ll post it up.

Out of interest, I use a CPAP, and have done for many years. However, I have just downloaded the app and it shows data from my nights sleep. The one quick observation based on virtually nothing is, I have more apnoea episodes when I have enjoyed a pint or glass of wine that evening!!

The statins gave me a slight headache which I think is what caused insomnia. I’ve given up caffeine all together.

Well done on doing that. Did you notice any difference?

It defo helped with the sleep, even 1 coffee affected me. There’s some lovely decaf coffee available, Kenco  Milicano is nice, it’s regularly on offer for £3.50. As for tea, I actually prefer the taste of PG Tips decaf, I would never go back.
