      Not a scientific test but..

Our XC40 parked alongside my son-in-laws Honda CRV overnight and in the sun since early – just opened both up. The Honda with factory tints was very very hot, the Volvo with aftermarket tints noticeably cooler .

I’ve seen the tinting material for sale on eBay, was thinking about it for the back windows of the estate we have, the privacy means we can leave the rear seats folded down without the wheelchair in the boot being visible.

Having watched ours being done, it’s not something I’d want to tackle myself but I know plenty of people (more agile than me) do. I paid £150 and very please will the result (a year on, now).

Depends what tints came from the factory on you sons car agaisnt what you had fitted aftermarket.

5%, 35% or 50% etc with 5% allowing less light/heat in the car

Factory tinted glass keeps out light but not very much heat. It’s just pigmentation in the glass.  It’s why we went for aftermarket (and it’s cheaper)!  I chose the standard level of tint car makers use .

On one of my previous motability cars (Ford Focus) it was much cheaper than factory tinted glass, Professional fitted Tints is something best left to the pros. I watch the process of  the focus being done. I was shocked when the fitter started to remove door panels and rear window panel. This so they can fully tint the whole glass. It was amazing to watch him do his stuff. The end result was fantastic. You could not distinguish the tints from factory glass tints. The fitter explained the different tints with regard to opacity and heat reflection properties. So dark tints of 35% and heat reflective it was. Really helped keep the car cool.

When I ordered my X1 I mentioned I was undecided about tints and I was advised not too bother and told we ( the dealer) don’t spec for our demo cars with tint’s we go round the corner and get them done aftermarket it’s cheaper and better.

My last 2 MB cars have came with tinted glass as standard but they were nowhere near dark enough for me – had them both professionally tinted like some of the posters above , around the 160/170 mark if i remember right , worth every penny – I think they actually knock the Vat off is the car has disabled tax status ??‍♂️

curent car is over 3 years old and has had tints fitted within a week , makes the car look much better and there is no way people can see into the back of my car – my little dog is always me so stops nosey people or annoying kids spotting him

I’ll agree with WW about keeping the car cooler too, even up here the Sun and Heat has been relentless the past couple of days , but I compared it with neighbours car the other day and mines def did feel cooler inside

obviously if the sun is shining directly onto the front windscreen for hours it wouldn’t make too much difference and the interior will feel like a boil in the bag curry that’s been left on for too long!

i know it’s common sense but those of you who have a pano roof , make sure you keep it the screen closed cos that makes a massive difference too!

3 year old tints and still in perfect nick

i mean it’s a proper skill doing it professionally , and I think what good companies charge is well worth the money ??

If I’m not mistaken MG don’t have any form of tint from the factory, so they have no option but go aftermarket if they want them.

I had a great interest in this when I read Wigwams post further back somewhere on the subject…

however I refrained from getting it done..  (even though that price is great)..

However I’m glad I didn’t now as I haven’t used the car that much just coming up to 10,000 miles, and the air con has been brilliant tbh…
