7 Seater or Estate – wheelchair storage

I currently have a Peugeot 5008 which we don’t use the 6/7th seats – these are permanently folded down to allow my wheelchair in the boot without taking the wheels off. However there is limited choice of 7 seaters especially in higher range specs or EV’s there is also limited choice of estate cars such as Octavia or Superb and those estates on the scheme arc smaller cars with reduced boot capacity due to hybrid systems.

what are everyone’s thoughts on this ? What do other wheelchair users do? I don’t need a WAV but although  new cars are larger externally I’m finding them less practical internally- may need to leave the scheme in the future in order to have a car that meets my wheelchair storage needs.

You could have a look at a Kuga, the rear seats have the ability to slide forwards about 200mm while still in the upright position. Its not the only car that can do this btw.

A Peugeot dealer told me the new 5008 7 seater will join the scheme. I forgotten when tbh.

We did look at the Kuga and you did have to move the rear seats to have as much boot space as say a Tucson ( but this impacts ability for rear seat passengers) also the PHEV model is £7.5k ap against £4.6 for the tucson

the 5008 when in 5 seat mode is over 900 litre capacity – ( it’s not on the scheme just now and we ruled out extending our current lease due to electrical gremlins it’s had since new and they can’t seem to fix) it’s a shame cars like a sorento,  Santa Fe, superb or Octavia estate aren’t available as these can cost less rrp than the Enyaq we ended up ordering.

Boot litre capacity doesn’t tell the full story either a lot depends on shape, height depth etc as to how useful the boot space is

ie the Ioniq is 520 litres and a wheelchair fits with back seats moved/tilted  forward – but my wheelchair was then taller than the  rear seats which obstructed the rear view

this Enyaq suv boot is a good height for me which at 585 litres is actually less than some tucsons

you do seem to need a large suv/ 7 seater to offer the same practicality as an medium/large estate car.

I have a Tucson and can fit wheelchair in boot but, do bare in mind boot space alters between the different powertrains. The ICE and HEV have the bigger boot, mild hybrid least room and PHEV somewhere in between.

I did see those cars on the website but dismissed them due to lack of  hybrid engine choice and or poor equipment specifications

Did seriously consider the Tucson, the FHEV would only marginally reduce my fuel spend, The plug in would need charged every night to provide electric commuting and or I’d have to pay for a home charger to reduce charging times. It’s a great car, my chair fitted with rear seats tilted slightly forward

in the end the full EV cars seem to offer the best value just now on the scheme especially with the standard installation of a home charger included – hence why we ordered a Enyaq

I did read something about a new 5008 which will offer hybrids/ full EV – it has a smaller boot apparently- don’t think it’s coming out until 2025

How many miles a day do you do?

I charge my Tucson 2,5 times a week from a 10A – 32A granny charger. I aim to install a commando socket when time allows, to make use of the 32A 7kW facility. Commando socket is much cheaper than installing a EV charger!

My commute is 30 miles return total hence why I considered the plug in Tucson-  was worried about charging every night with a granny cable to our outdoor sockets ( std 3 pin for lawnmower etc) and was worried I may have to pay to upgrade our electrics if we changed to / added a special socket

At the moment, I’m just using a socket in the living room and poking the cable through the window. Typical sparky way 🤣

It comes with a 10A granny charger and a type 2 cable. Using the granny charger the plug & socket stay cool to touch. I also have a used selectable A charger cable from ebay (£50), selecting 13A 3kW the plug and socket barely get warm and will be even cooler if plugged in outside.

The downside but, it isn’t bothering me is it takes 5hrs from empty.

An interlocked commando socket would charge at the full 7.4kW taking 2ish hours from empty. Cost wise your looking at £300 – £400 to supply and fit depending where you are. If you want O Pen device for PEN fault detection depending on your home earthing arrangement add approx £50-£60. Alternatively an earth rod would be cheaper.

Thank you – I will look into  changing one of our outdoor sockets or adding the higher output one
