About 25 years ago before the whole environmental issue was an issue I stopped to post a letter in a post box about 4 feet from my car and left it running, a police officer was walking past and insisted that I switch my engine off. I reluctantly complied and then he threatened to give me a ticket if I didn’t remove my keys from the ignition before posting my letter, I don’t know what offence I would have been committing and didn’t have the time or inclination to bother finding out.
