Do the plate transfer online, hand the car back with your own private number plates on it. Tell whoever you give the car back to here is the new number for this car. You will then have to ask the dealer to make you a new set of plates with your personal number to go on to your new car. It costs a dealer around £7.00 to make a set of plates. Ask them nicely and they should do it for you.
