Hoping for some advice. I am due to hand my current car back on Saturday and currently have my private plate on it. Is it ok to remove the plates from the vehicle through DVLA and put it on retention then hand the car back to motability for them to update the plates? I believe you get 3 days to arrange the correct age related plates bit i am handing the car back within those 3 days and dont want the cost of replacing and fitting new plates. Thanks

There is a link in your MoB account that enables you to do it. Did you not keep the plates the car came with when you took them off? 99% odds on that that’s the reg that DVLA will reassign.

I never knew I could request them from a dealer.

Thanks for the reply. No i didnt get plates with it as the dealership put my private plate on it for me collecting as it was on retention. I would need to pay to get plates made up and fitted. I know i can remove my plate on my motability account but wanted to know if i can return it as is and let them change the plates to whatever they were originally because it is being returned within 3 days of DVLA being notified.

Probably better to phone motability to check your plan is ok.

But best guess if you hand a car back with no plates on it, you will lose your gcb. Having no plates means it is not road legal.

Or just spend a few quid getting halfords to make and fit the plates for you. Is it really worth losing £250 for £20 plates?

Better safe than sorry,  phone and ask

Do the plate transfer online, hand the car back with your own private number plates on it. Tell whoever you give the car back to here is the new number for this car. You will then have to ask the dealer to make you a new set of plates with your personal number to go on to your new car. It costs a dealer around £7.00 to make a set of plates. Ask them nicely and they should do it for you.

                  Motability will not allow that.

The DVLA will assign a new registration number, but you will need to pay to have a set made up and put on the vehicle before you return it.

Your better off having standard plates assigned by dealer for your new car and then arranging to have your private plates assigned through your online account. It save alot of hassle!

I usually put mine on to retention 2 weeks before the change over date.
Take the car with its assigned reg plates.

Go online an swap the plates on the Motability site.

Take original plates off, and put on my own.

That way I never need to replace any set of plates, and my own get cleaned and never leave my possession.
