Motability’s Hire Agreement terms (The blue booklet), at least from October 2025 clearly state that they can add Drive Smart, or any other telematics device seemingly at any time during a lease.
Sections 3.2 / 3.3.3 and 5.5 are specifically key here.
They are quite long, so I don’t want to mistype them but by my reading they state that a telematic device can be installed at any time during the lease if Motabilty decide, and especially when the ‘fair use’ policy is exceeded [so excessive breakdowns / tyres / damage to car that needs an insurance payout]
Interestingly 3.3.3 states ‘drivers under 30, new to scheme drivers ……” so this change was decided a few months ago, and is only now being impliemented.
