Motability’s push to EVs could be good in the long term. For those who can’t currently charge at home, solutions need to be found. Research for these solutions need funding and testing. It may be possible that Motability putting its weight into EV charging could well advance the solutions much quicker than almost anyone else.
In the short term this is going to cause problems though. Not only for those who don’t want to transition to EVs but for those unable due to an inability to charge at home. It’s widely understood that charging at home makes a massive saving for EVs over every other form of transport. Once you’re regularly charging publicly the financial equation doesn’t work. Unless Motability put their influence behind convincing suppliers that public charging is unaffordable and the current Motability solution of a BP Pulse card isn’t enough to make a jot of difference.
Personally, I find EVs a perfect choice, the ease of driving with a single pedal plus the convenience of charging at home are huge benefits to me. That doesn’t mean that I expect everyone to fall in line and buy one, nor that personal choice should be punished which is where some of these AP rises for ICE seems to be going.
