I currently have my own car registered in my name that is in the tax-exempt class. Next week, I pick up my Motability car. I assume the minute I collect my Motability car my personal car will have to be changed back to a private class, and I will have to pay tax from that point on. In which case, if I drive my car to the dealer 30 miles away to collect the Motability car, and my partner drives our personal car back home, I assume she will be driving an untaxed vehicle? Is there any cross over allowed to enable this to happen?
The change to the taxation class of your private vehicle has to be initiated by you. It doesn’t happen automatically. Simply collect your new car and when you are back home commence the procedure to remove the exemption from your private vehicle. Alternatively, if it’s worrying you, as tax runs in whole months, you could commence the removal of the exemption from your current car on 1st October.
