Clearly we dont know what happened and hopefully an investigation will find out (although if the vehicle has been scrapped already thats going to be difficult). For me this is a good reminder to everyone that using/relying on things like adaptive cruise control and lane departure when driving around town etc are risky. I have a friend who used to use these all the time and it was scary being with him in the car because he totally left the car to keep him in lane and apart from the car in front. I need to finish by saying again I am absolutely NOT saying the above is what happened (we dont know), but its a good reminder of how to use these systems well. Could be worth visiting the road again to see whether there are any significant repair lines which might fool the cars system. Good luck with the investigation
thank you for this important reminder. It is worrying that people will rely on this as more cars have it in the future.
in my case, the whole driver assist was a peace of mind back up as I can only use my left hand. The same with the Veigel 7.
I felt the car pull right and the steering aid was pulled out of my hand. The car then pulled again to the right, sharper this time and went into oncoming traffic. I said to the police at the time that it felt like I’d hit ice, mud, diesel etc but the car should have not allowed me to cross the centre line due to all the driver assistance activated. I was told by the police no such car assistance exists. I explained that nothing had worked the way it should, crossed the white line with no vibration warning or automatic centring, airbags didn’t go off, didn’t automatically call emergency services, engine was screaming and wouldn’t switch off etc. Police claim I wasn’t concentrating, I know that’s not true.
