Currently his higher rate mobility award is being paid to Motability in exchange for his car. Stop the car he’ll get that payment himself.
When we lost my dad, there wasn’t a full time driver for my mum’s motability car so she spoke to Motability explaining the situation and handed back the car with no surrender charge. We simply took the car back to the dealer at an agreed time and had a Motability provided taxi pick us up from the dealer and took us home. She can now use that money to fund taxis if I’m not available to take her anywhere.
We didn’t see the point in me having my own car and her holding one in the drive for taking her places once or twice a week. The additional money from DWP helped reduce the impact of the loss of income from pensions for dad.
Anyhow, the process is very simple, a quick phone call and it can all be arranged, last drive to a dealer and a lift home (if the main driver is no longer safe to drive then any nominated driver can take it and the Motability account holder to the dealer). A while after the car was returned she has a payment for the good condition bonus, increased for the slightly extended lease, and her DWP payments had a correctional payment (part payment for whatever period she didn’t have the car) then returned to normal daily living plus enhanced mobility elements.
So sorry to hear of his health deterioration, it’s tough to get a reminder that we’re all getting older and some of us less healthy.
