The main issue is price. Be it AP on Motability, or purchase price if buying privately. I could not see my fuel savings ever repaying the upfront costs.
I make frequent trips to Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge from West Yorkshire. It’s a 335 mile round trip.
Ideally I’d drive down park up using one of the charge points at the hospital whilst I’m in hospital for a few hours then drive home.
But every time I travel down, there has never been a vacant charger.
The last thing I went to do after a 3hr+ drive and 3hr+ sat around a hospital is to set off home only to park up at the services and wait for my vehicle to charge up.
This would be even worse at this time of year when the cold weather affects battery and charging performance. This added to the potential of LONG delays on the A1, especially if there’s been an accident. Although I’d hope having the heater on whilst sat stationary in a traffic jam wouldn’t drain the battery too much, I’d be more concerned that many EV drivers would take the opportunity to leave the A1 at the nearest services to charge their vehicles rather than sat in a traffic jam. Currently there’s not enough chargers to cope with an influx of vehicles during this scenario (a scenario which I believe is not at all far fetched)
If I won an EV, I would only use it for journeys that were in range, with a large safety gap. For the last 2 years, I have only been inside hospitals, my own home, my family’s gardens and very quick in-and -out trips to a few places like Toolstation, or using a toilet. I do not want to be waiting around inside places while my EV charges.
I will of course, purchase/lease an EV when things improve (chargers and their speed) AND they are affordable.
