My family are Clan Gordon on my mothers’ side and there are an awful lot of ‘Alexanders’ in the family. Her father (Alexander, named for his father and grandfather) and his brother/mum’s uncle both served in the Grenadier Guards during WWII. (I thought it would have been the Gordons, but it was definitely the Grenadiers.)
When we were kids mum would tell us about how she used to ‘help’ her mother help him to put on his great kilt, which involved trapping one end of the cloth with the pantry window while her mum arranged all the pleats before he pretty much mummified himself with it. A ruddy great pin was involved at some point, which she still has stashed away somewhere.
Mums brother (my Uncle Alec!) served and did three Tours in Northern Ireland, though I mostly remember that he drove Antars in Germany because a family joke was “It’s big. But it’s not as big as an Antar!”
