Not an XC40, but a Kuga with an electric tailgate – I seriously just wanted to take the fuse out of the sensor that opens and closes the tailgate.

I can be arranging stuff in the boot, shuffling slightly from side to side when all of a sudden – clonk! And occasionally, it does come really quite keen. There is a warning signal when it’s opening or closing but when the neighbours are mowing, their kids are playing in the street, the guy up the road is revving his Harley…

And on the flip-side, most of the time when walking back to the car with both hands full, and I want to use the “kick” motion to open the tailgate – which was the big selling point when they first came out – the flaming thing won’t work! I look like I’m auditioning for Riverdance at the back of the car trying to get the boot to open. I’m dancing like Michael Flatley after a crate of RedBull. More often than not, I just have to put the bag on ground, fish the key out of my pocket and use the fob. Defeats the point.

I’m not a luddite, but just give me an electric tailgate, not the fancy schmancy that doesn’t work as intended.
