XC40 tailgate safety

I have just returned from Volvo dealership after having to have a second update within 4 weeks due to problems.  One of the problems which I complained about was that the tailgate safety sensors were not working as it had hit my wife on the head, and almost taken my dog’s snout off.  The dealer’s technician has just told me that there are no sensors, and that the tailgate will only stop and go back up when it hits you.  I was absolutely gobsmacked.  A top of the line, Inscription Pro, model from a supposedly premium brand, and that is the extent of there safety system!  I had better than that in a mid-range Toyota, 6 years ago.

I’m lucky in that my wife is with me most of the time to load my wheelchair in the boot, but not always.  I’m not looking forward to getting hit by the tailgate.

I’m sorry to hear that. My VW Tiguan elegance model is the same, it only stops once it hits an object.

Also true of the BMW X1, I think.

My biggest issue with the BMW is when it’s not opened fully due to a low roof and not noticed, walked into it several times, not given it such a clever name though, but called it and myself a few choice words 🙂

Bit of the tread I know but does anyone with an X1 think that the sun viseres are not big enough.. and no seat belt height adjusters or is it just me

Not an XC40, but a Kuga with an electric tailgate – I seriously just wanted to take the fuse out of the sensor that opens and closes the tailgate.

I can be arranging stuff in the boot, shuffling slightly from side to side when all of a sudden – clonk! And occasionally, it does come really quite keen. There is a warning signal when it’s opening or closing but when the neighbours are mowing, their kids are playing in the street, the guy up the road is revving his Harley…

And on the flip-side, most of the time when walking back to the car with both hands full, and I want to use the “kick” motion to open the tailgate – which was the big selling point when they first came out – the flaming thing won’t work! I look like I’m auditioning for Riverdance at the back of the car trying to get the boot to open. I’m dancing like Michael Flatley after a crate of RedBull. More often than not, I just have to put the bag on ground, fish the key out of my pocket and use the fob. Defeats the point.

I’m not a luddite, but just give me an electric tailgate, not the fancy schmancy that doesn’t work as intended.

Yes, Adrian, this! I too thought my days of Dad dancing were over, but no, you put your left foot in, your left foot out , in out in out shake it all about…and…nada. Then, days later, you unlock the car, walk past the rear and the boot mysteriously rises.

In life, it's not who you know that's important, it's how your wife found out.
