    PIP and ESA appeal success rates hold steady

    The latest Tribunal Service statistics show the success rate for PIP and ESA appeals is holding steady.

    The figures cover the quarter from October to December 2019.

    They show that the overall success rate for social security claimants who have to go all the way to an appeal hearing has risen to 71%, up 1% on the same period a year ago.

    The success rate for ESA appeals is now 77%, the same as the last quarter and up 3% on a year ago.

    The success rate for PIP appeals is now 76%, the same as the last quarter and up 2% on a year ago.

    For DLA the success rate is now 68%, down 1% on last quarter and for UC it is 62%, up 1% on last quarter.

    The backlog of social security appeals has fallen by 24%.

    But the time taken for a case to come to hearing has risen to 32 weeks, an increase of two weeks on a year ago.

    There has been a 23% rise in the number of PIP appeals and a 95% rise in UC appeals.

    There has been a huge fall of 68% in ESA appeals.

    PIP made up 58% of all social security appeals.
