Dealer is having a laugh

Earlier this week (Tuesday) my dealer called to let me know my car was there and when would I like to collect it 🤔  I jokingly said July in case the deposit goes down but I’d happily get it anytime as soon as the hand controls are fitted.

The garage contacted the installer and they won’t be installed until next week at the earliest, so that’s us into July and the next quarter.

Today they’ve sent me an email requesting payment of the deposit… they are definitely having a laugh if they think I’m gony send them nearly £3k today when the prices could drop on Monday 🤔 😂😂😂

I know they probably won’t fall but I can live in hope over the weekend 🤞😁

Probs going to get moaned at for this but

Tbh most dealers are now requesting payment before collection couple days before.

I also think it’s little cheeky to not want to pay on the chance the price could change. I mean you obviously was happy with the price when you placed the order and also you wouldn’t offer to pay more if the price when up.

And are you sure dealer would agree to let you pay lower ap if it dropped as none that I have been with would agree was only left with option to cancel myself reorder and go back to start of process again.

@Borris it may sound a bit cheeky to you but to me it’s plain stupidity to pay today when prices could fall on Monday.

Yes I’m happy to pay the agreed AP if that remains the same but I’m not going to pay more than I have to.

@Robert88 they either drop the AP as its only an admin adjustment or I cancel and reorder… garage still makes the same money from the sale while I save £’s

I see your point but what I’m saying is would you also be happy to pay more if the price went up? You say you not going to pay on chance if might drop but technically dealers are not supposed to do this a they do not have to.

also as the above comment do you know the dealers will do this for you most I’ve spoken to will not.

@Borris  who would be happy to pay more and for us why would we… have you not read this forum before because the main theme is order the vehicle you want now before the next quarter and if the prices fall then get it adjusted by the dealer or cancel & reorder.

However if you’re happy to pay over the odds that’s fine but I’m not.

The deposit price dropping to the lowest point is agreed with motability, there is no disgrace in following the contract agreements, why would there be? I believe the payment of the full AP on collection is also standard practice, why would anyone consider that wrong?

Why not send payment say on Tuesday, afterall it’s a bank transfer they want, which takes a maximum of 24hrs to reach them. That way if the AP drops Monday, you can hopefully get them to lower the AP (if it does) on Monday prior to paying.

@rhodgie can’t wait to see this limo. I’d wait as well.

It’s poor practice from Motability to not offer you the car at either the price when you order OR the price when you pick up, whichever is lower. Motability know what orders are in the pipeline, so should have a good idea of how many folk may be affected and what their financial commitment is.

I’ve always said motability should make it standard practice to accept the lower AP if it has dropped by time your  car is  ready for pick-up.

As DumfriesDik says, Motability need to change their rules to offer the ordered AP or pick-up AP, whichever is lower. I would definitely be tempted to wait but they may just deliberately stick to the rules and refuse to adjust the AP if it goes down. That may then leave you with the option of paying the current AP or make you completely re-order and give your car to someone else. This would be a very extreme thing for them to do but it depends what your dealers like and whether it’s an in demand car they could shift immediately.

You should give Motability a call and ask them about it. They must know Q3 prices by now.

Ive had 4 cars now from Motability, 3 out of 4 dealers reduced the AP for me but the car i have on order just now the current dealer wont budge on it and give me the reduced price. Does seem a bit crazy that if the price goes down you still pay a higher price.

Of course he wouldn’t be happy to pay increased AP that’s not the point motability make so much profit from the scheme they could easily let there members pay less if AP goes down lots of dealers already do but there are as many dealers who won’t budge and motability must be aware that lots of dealers are altering the AP while a lot of customers are not being given the same deal.

Probably should make sure that we’re even talking AP here, since you call it deposit. Dealers can and do ask for deposits all the time. If the dealer asks for a deposit, it could be that he intends to make sure you pick the car up after the new prices drop, rather than cancelling and ordering a shinier car from a different manufacturer.

AP is not a deposit, dealers don’t call it deposit either. A deposit is always (by definition) part of a bigger payment. You never clarified if you called it a deposit, or they did. In fact, Motability on the webpage even states that AP is not a deposit, in the first sentence of “What’s AP”.

Further, i’d also call them and explain the situation, rather than acting like this. They seem nice enough, not quite sure why “we’re having a laugh” here. Maybe i’m too old for this stuff, but my first instinct/course of action would be a call to them, explain them what’s going on and why you’re not paying right now.

                                            That’s just me though.

                                              Well said @Rene.

And I don’t know if Rhodgie is “having a laugh” with lee1480 or just being obtuse, but it’s a fair point.

You don’t pay the increased AP if it goes up between ordering and delivery, but you expect to reap the benefits if it goes down.

As has been discussed many times, it’s at the dealer’s discretion whether to carry out the admin change and reorder at the lower AP. They are not duty bound to do with the current rules.

As suggested, talk to them, stay calm and friendly and they might waive the “deposit” (AP) until you collect the car, or play ball if the AP goes 👇, but show them a bit of entitled attitude and it’ll be you who misses out.

Yes AP not deposit, calling it that is an old habit, I’ll pay more attention in future. The garage email said “Request for Payment” and “Balance Due” so took me back 😂

I wasn’t having a laugh or being obtuse with lee1480, I just thought it was a silly statement to make, who in this forum would be happy to pay a higher AP? How many posts have stated Order Now, you can always cancel later if prices drop.

I’ve already spoken with garage earlier this week when car was delivered to them and now we’re waiting on the hand controls being fitted. As I said in my original post, I joked with the salesman about getting it in July in case the AP went down BUT I also said I was happy to get it anytime, maybe I was being nieve thinking the hand controls could be fitted before Friday for collection at the weekend? If it’d been ready on Sunday 30th I’d have paid the Sunday price.

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘acting like this’ 🤔  and I’m not having a laugh but I feel the garage must be if they expect a motability customer to pay out nearly £3k on a Friday when that AP could potentially drop to £0 on Monday 🤞🙏. I doubt it’ll fall at all but I’m certainly going to wait and see then I’ll contact them on Monday to pay whatever I owe.

And why would anyone think I need to stay calm or that showing them a bit of entitled attitude means I’d miss out… 🤷‍♂️ where do you think I’m not being calm, I already said how I was joking with the salesman, we get along just fine. How would I miss out with an entitled attitude, which I certainly do not have, this is a business deal where I’m paying a set price for a specific product, there is no need to negotiate or appease anyone… you simply say “I’ll have that car, here’s the money” and if you don’t want my business there’s plenty of other dealers who will.  Also dealers may not be duty bound to reduce the AP but I’m not duty bound to accept that car until I’m happy and have entered my PIN, until then I can still change my mind and walk away so it’s in both our interests to get the deal done.

Jeez what I thought was a fun Friday story sure brought out the moaning Minnie’s to try and rain on my parade 🌧🫣😂  keep a look out for the AP of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 Ultimate to see whether it changes from £3,499 and I might come back to update this post on what I finally pay 😉

I don’t understand all the huff and puff of asking politely, if the dealer will lower the AP should the AP go down on Monday. I do it, so does everyone else. It wasn’t long ago someone on here cancelled their car and ordered from another dealership, because the AP went down by silly money and the dealer wouldn’t resubmit the paperwork. Think it was in the Enyak thread.

Rene paying them right now? Were in the 21st century, where a bank transfer takes from as little as 2hrs to a maximum of 24hrs in most cases. As long as the dealership gets it prior to the day of collection, thats all that matters. Your getting old mate lol. That said I wouldn’t pay untill I’d looked at the car a day or two before collection, Its much harder getting your money back once you have paid and then find a problem.
