      Hi. A bit off topic.

A friend is leaving the Motability scheme and wanting to buy a car, VW 2020 Tiguan 4 motion SEL. As I have never owned a car away from thew scheme, sad isn’t it lol, I don’t really understand the tax/ved system..

I can see the rates on new car purchase’s and that you have to pay additional rates in the first years etc but if you buy a second hand car how does it work and do you have to pay extras?

      Cheers for any info provided.

Assuming that your friend is eligible for VED exemption (highly likely if eligible for a Motability car) then they can register the private car as their exempt vehicle, so they will not have to pay VED, even the higher rates that apply for the first 5 years to cars that were over £40k

Thank you so much for the information Glos Guy. Their lease ends next week, as does mine, So am also considering leaving the scheme as there’s nothing really suitable for me and with the advance payments getting higher, now maybe the time to buy what I love and keep it!!!

As long as you’re entitled to higher rate mobility element of PIP or equivalent benefit, then you are automatically entitled to a disabled person’s exemption from VED on one vehicle.  Motability take advantage of this in taxing our scheme cars but if you leave the scheme, then you can just as easily register  your next car yourself.
